So I had just said something in another thread about Dharma's last lump check being clean. Well, today we went for a recheck and the big one on her back leg has a lot of granules. Definitely a mast cell tumor. She has surgery on Wednesday to have it removed, and it will be sent off for biopsy. Depending on what grade it is and what else the vet finds, we may have to do chemo. We went through this with Nine, so at least I know what to expect. But I hate this crap. As most of you know, last year was awful with losing our old girls Nine and Kuma. And then Barley at only age 7 because of effing cancer. Can't help feeling like there's something we could be doing differently to prevent this crap, but I don't know what. So depressed right now.

Sooo sorry Suzi. My heart goes out to you and Dharma girl. There is nothing you could have done differently! Harley just had her third mast cell tumor removed last month. Fortunately they have all been low grade. However, the last one was discovered on a punch biopsy so the vet did not get clean margins. Because she is in kidney failure we are just watching it and are contemplating the surgery. My vet said that he believes some dogs are just predisposed to these types of tumors and we are at their mercy. Fingers crossed for a low grade one with surgery being curative. Keep us posted. Hugs to you and Dharma and always here for you.

I'm so sorry you are going through this with Miss D. Please don't let yourself think along the lines of "something we could be doing to prevent". Cancer is a horrible heartless and awful thing, but it tends to be pretty random. You are doing the best as is by your pets, don't let your thoughts go down that road.
Praying for whatever is the best outcome. Big hugs.

Hang in there.... effing cancer!
I do wonder, tho, re potential causes and triggers if things DO contribute like kibble, car exhaust, fertilizers, household cleaners, smoking (I'm smoking again but only outside)....etc.???? !!!! My husband uses a lot of fertilizers, insecticides and I have done nothing to look for pet-safe cleaners (but I don't clean the house very often...LOL so I don't use them that frequently inside). Even the rubber backed throw rugs that my Ruby lays on all of the time could be outgassing, in fact I'm sure they are becasue one of them turned my asphalt kitchen tile underneath it a different color and made it shinier....... Even the hormones/antibiotics in meat that we eat and what makes it into dog food. Problem is we do still not completely know exactly what does what to what....
HEALING WISHES FOR GOOD MARGINS FOR YOU!!!

^ You're totally right about all the crap in the air we breathe, food we eat, etc. We actually are pretty good about that stuff. No chemicals in the yard, environmentally safe cleaners, organic foods, etc. The dogs even drink double filtered water like us. But we can't control the fact that the larger world around us is full of harmful toxins, which sucks. And in the end, Barley still had brain cancer and Nine had mast cells tumors and spinal myelopathy, and now Dharma has mast cell tumor. We try so hard to keep them safe and healthy but it seems like these things are mostly beyond our control.

I agree a lot of things are out of control and a lot of things are genetic. I take better care of Harley than I do myself...LOL...and yet she yet has been in Kidney failure over two years and had multiple mast cell tumors among other things. Really is disheartening.

Vet just called while she has Dharma on the table for surgery. She found two more very tiny mast cell tumors on her left side and wants to start Dharma on chemo in two weeks. She's also removing two broken canines that have exposed roots. My poor Dharma girl. Michele, looks like I'll once again be using that book you sent me last year when Barley was sick. Thank you again for that. I think I'm going to try to warp up the most pressing things here at the office and leave early today. Between the migraine and the increasingly bad news about Dharma I'm just wrecked right now.
