Hello,
My family adopted a dog this last weekend, "Bear" was his shelter name, but he's "Yogi" now, and we are on a mission to determine breed or mix thereof, not because it "really" matters, but just because we are really curious and there are about a million opinions out there . I am also curious because there are some behavioral tendencies as well potential health concerns related to breed.
I am going to try to load a couple pics with this post, so we'll see what happens.
He is 1.5 years old, weighs 64 lbs, needs to gain about 3, so healthy weight will be about 67ish pounds. His head and his paws seem really large compared to his body, so people generally really question if he's 1.5 yo, but the vet confirmed that is the case.
He is an absolute love! He's been mostly sleeping since we brought him home on Sat, but is really starting to come out of his shell yesterday and even more today. He is very calm, gentle, affectionate but not obnoxious and just all around well behaved with great house manners, we are soooo lucky! Our obedience class begins 4/22/14, so excited to start. I'm hoping in addition to obedience, we will be doing agility and/or carting (carting mostly, I need help in the garden, not as young as I used to be!) Also, I don't know him well enough yet, but so far his temperament is really making me think therapy may be in his future.
Bad news, my vet found a heart murmur. Xray showed no enlargement or fluid, but we've decided to go ahead and do an echocardiogram just so we know what's causing it, whether it's treatable or just physiologic, etc; also, we'll have to do it before he can do carting or agility or anything like that, as per my vet. So we'll see what happens, fingers crossed!
Anyway, back to breed; the shelter vet has him documented as a Cane Corso Mastiff, and quite a few people has suggested some Mastiff in there. My vet suggested Pit X. I think Pit X with maybe some Mastiff of some kind, the wrinkles and head shape and size seem to suggest Presa or CC, but could also indicate lots of other breeds. He's on the large size for a Pit, so that makes me think he's got a bit of something bigger in there.
Thoughts?
