I am obsessed with books in general, but of course APBT books are especially appealing to me. Let's talk about the good, the bad, and the ridiculous ones here!

I love Mike Homan's 2 books on dog fighting and SBTs in Sport and Art... both very scholarly with original sources. NOT Stratton type apologies . Someday I can get rich selling them since they're out of print!

I recommend "Pit Bulls for Dummies" for all new and prospective owners. Diane Jessup's books are good, even though I'm not a fan of her otherwise. I was a bit disappointed in O'Neil's "The Ultimate American Pit Bull Terrier" since it came so highly recommended. Most of the commonly-sold breed series books are completely useless.
I'd really love to read "The Pit Bull Placebo" and "Fatal Dog Attacks" by Karen Delise, but unfortunately our county libraries don't have any copies.

I like those last two as well. The Pit Bull Placebo and Fatal Dog Attacks. Helpful for the breed.

I haven't read "Pit Bulls for dummies" but I know that the "for dummies" dog breed books are really good, I've read a lot of them when I used to work in a pet store.

I have seen a lot of people recommend the For Dummies books, and I guess I should pick up this one. I like the general format of the books and usually enjoy reading them anyway.

Just to give those of you a teaser You know, I'm not opposed to mailing the book out to those who wanna read it lol! Gotta let Kat get her hands on it first though!

I agree with the pit bulls for dummies books, that's the one book my breeder asked me to read, I knew most of the stuff, but it was a good refresher.

There is a book by Joe Colby from I think the 1930's (I can't remember exactly) called The American Pit Bull Terrier. It was really interesting. It's always an education going to the source and hearing things from the horse's mouth. You can get a really good idea of where the breed came from and a better understanding of its history.

See, people are now passing around the link to the book "The Dog Pit" on Amazon (thanks to another individual who I don't really care for her ethics, and I know its been passed around before) and I don't admit this to many people, but I WANT those books. I want to learn, not for the sake of doing, but for the sake of KNOWING. How can you make an educated "argument" with people if you don't know what the hell you are talking about? The only other way to really learn is by talking to an old timer, and really, how many do you think would actually talk about that freely?

Emily, keep an eye on Amazon! I was b*tching about that too and then one day, there it was! Available for purchase. That's the only way I got the copy that I did for roughly $15

I have that book actually on my wish list; I also want Memoirs of the Pit; I have Armitage's 30 Years with Fighting Dogs and the Colby book I mentioned above. Call me crazy, but I am fascinated with our breed's history. I cannot imagine being a breed fancier, yet being petrified of my breed's history. It's really astounding some of these mindsets.

Oh yes, the Sporting Bull Terrier, I've wanted that one for a while too (LOL I want them all). I haven't read the Bully Breeds book..... You MUST read Dossier of a Dangerous Dog. It is gorgeously written, I enjoyed it immensely (even though Vicki Hearne was a hard-line old school Koehler trainer, and anthropomorphizes a bit too much for my taste, doG rest her soul, it's still a book every APBT/anti-BSL warrior should read).

BANDIT is easy. I actually don't like it much.. and it's NOT about a pit bull (after being coy about the issue for half the book, she finally ID's him as an American Bulldog).
I have all the reprints of the oldtime books being mentioned. Very very worthwhile reading. And you'll find some things that are good "ammunition" against the dogfighting apologists (Colby's book has a chapter on pit bulls as "all around" dogs) They shouldn't be expensive; the ones available are cheap reproductions. Just be aware that the photo reproductions are poor (they may not have been great in the original either). You can find the Stratton (ugh) books too. Stevens' book is probably harder to find, and while I have it, I find it quite repellent. Though there again, he talks about using a cat in a box as "bait" for a dog, so there goes THAT piece of apologist b.s.

There is a big difference between using an animal in a box as motivation that the dog will never touch, and allowing a Pit Bull to tear up 'bait' animal because they think it will teach the dog 'to fight'. I think the latter is what people have taken to task. Edited to add: Not that I approve of EITHER. : :
