I don't know anything about Artemis....is it that good? I've been feeding Natural Balance for a while. I like that they test every batch for poisons/contaminates before it goes out.

I'd like to note that they did NOT recommend the regular Diamond food, but rather the Chicken Soup, Premium Edge, and Taste of the Wild.

I do recommend owners actually check out the Whole Dog Journal for explanations of the above foods, but figured I'd post these lists for quick reference.

I just know a lot of BYB-ers around here recommend Diamond for pit bulls, and a lot of pit bull owners who don't know any better think it is a good food, so I thought it was important to note.

Why is diamond specifically bad for pit bulls? I was wondering because a friend of mine feeds her white pit bull, along with her other dogs (shepard mixes) the chicken soup food, and the pit bull gets red on her butt when eating it. Not itchy or anything, her skin just gets redish. She switched her off of it onto another one by the same company and it went away. She called Diamond and they said that the ingredients aren't much different.

Not itchy or anything, her skin just gets redish. She switched her off of it onto another one by the same company and it went away. She called Diamond and they said that the ingredients aren't much different. Which food did your friend switch to? Dogs can have allergies/skin reactions to even the best of foods if one of the ingredients is a trigger. Here are the ingredients in the regular Adult Diamond formula. The first few ingredients (the stuff the food is mostly made up of) are what I have issues with: Meat meal (not necessarily bad, but I want to know WHAT sort of meat my dog is getting - I don't like a mystery when it comes to foods I put in my or my dog's body) Ground corn (a cheap protein source) Wheat Flour (prone to inciting skin conditions - dogs should get whole grains - if they are getting any grains at all). Here is the full ingredient list: Here are the ingredients to the Chicken Soup Adult Dog Forumla....if Diamond told your friend the two are essentially the same, the person was either really uneducated or purposefully misleading. The ingredients in Chicken Soup are SO much better. Check out the fact that actual meat TYPES are listed - and the first 2 aren't meals. Also note the WHOLE GRAINS. Here is the full ingredient list: Hope this helps

No, she was feeding her the chicken soup one and switched to another one by the same brand, I thought Diamond made it, or am I mistaken? I looked at the 2 bags, and the ingredients were exactly the same only 2 ingredients were switched in order, I wish I could think of the name of the one she switched to. But anyway, her dog's redness went away. The red wasn't itchy for her at all and it didn't look too irritated, just reddish or pink in color. Very strange. I feed Lucy the chicken soup food. I am really happy with it, it's affordable and much better than the rest of the commercial dog foods.

I find it odd that Canidae (which has had lots of problems recently) is on the list, but the Wellness/OMH line is not... It is on the list, OMH recently bought Eagle Pack...and the company is now WellPet. But all of the Wellness foods, Core, etc. are on the list. But yeah, interesting about the Canidae.

Boo, I just read this from the Great Dane Lady...I'm finishing up a bag of Eagle Pack Holistic Select chicken for Murphy, I guess I won't be buying it again. Hello, I just wanted to clarify the Wellness/Eagle issue as I have been an outside nutritional consultant from the for 22 years and helped design many of their products. Eagle went to a private investor for financial resources and then the investor bought Wellness (OMH) and tried to merge the two into WellPet LLC. Both are very diversified in their management style and in fact it was like mixing oil and water. The current situation is, in the past few weeks Eagle has been devoured by WellPet management, there is nothing left of Eagle as we knew it. All decisions are know made by WellPet. WellPet does not own their own plant, the food is made on other plants - Diamond at least in part makes their food. (editorial comment: Quality control is of utmost importance to me and a safety track record at a plant is critical). Eagle owned their own family plant. with a great track record, no dog food was in any of the recalls. I worked for the new WellPet for 2 months and 8 long days and refused to sign a contract to stay with them due to key changes in personnel, management styles, great philosophical differences, and their stopping of overseas sales of Eagle. Most sales staff have left on their own accord for the same reasons. I can count on one hand who is left. Eagle as we have known it is no longer. I do not know what the future holds - but we know what happen to quality companies that are taken over by large corporations. Linda www.GreatDaneLady.com

Can u buy any of those "top" foods from petstores (petsmart or petco) or are they all sold by vet's. only? Petco sells Wellness and (I think) Solid Gold products Petsmart sells some other premium brands. The websites of the foods usually have a place to search for retailers. BTW: Petco charges $7 more for a bag of Wellness than a feed/pet store in the next town, where I usually buy it. They have a buy 10 get one free program, and many of the food companies have their own discount/coupon programs.

The best food Petsmart sells, by far, is Blue Buffalo, followed by Nutro Ultra. (But Nutro is now owned by Mars, which I don't trust at all, and uses beet pulp.) Blue Buffalo has good ingredients and, although they don't own their own plant, they do a lot of safety testing. For cats, they sell By Nature which is also a good food and on the list, but they don't carry the dog line.
Petco sells Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Solid Gold, Castor & Pollux, and Natural Balance, but their prices tend to be a lot higher than anywhere else. At least around here.

Nutro may... or may not... be under investigation by the FDA...

From what I've read, Nurto is NOT under investigation, BUT there absolutely are reports of dogs getting sick. So.....I dunno.
