My original education came from the Stratton books, and although these books can be construed as "pro dog fighting", and I do think they soften up dog fighting in general, they are still some of the best books out there for a solid breed material, way beyond the 101 scope of most other APBT books.
I also strongly recommend The Ultimate Pit Bull by Jacqueline Frasier O'Neil and Jessup's The Working Pit Bull. (Jessup also wrote an amazing fiction book about a Pit Bull called The Dog Who Spoke with Gods....)
Also, no owner should be without Karen Delise's two books: Fatal Dog Attacks and The Pit Bull Placebo.

Mike Homan's 2 books:
A Complete History of Fighting Dogs (the NON Stratton version.. very scholarly) The Staffordshire bull terrier in history and sport (great old illustrations and reprints)
both out of print here, and if you have a copy guard it with your life!

ANYTHING THAT IS WROTE BY RICHARD STRATTON OR CARL SEMENCIC is only partial history, glorifies dogfighting and is passe. There are so many better books that portray the breed more fully and accurately.

Carl Semencic is not really a breed expert. I'd stay away from his books. He means well, but he's not someone I'd consider a source for info.

THE HISTORY PART THE RICHARD STRATTON WRITES ABOUT IS WERE ARE PITBULLS COME FROM, THE DOGFIGHTING ASPECT IS WHAT MADE OUR DOG. MOST OF THE DOGS HE WRITES ABOUT ARE IN ALOT OF THE MODERN DAY PITBULL PEDIGREES, HATE IT OR LOVE IT DOGFIGHTING IS WHAT MADE THE PITBULL AND I ALSO THINK IT IS WHAT SETS OUR BREED APART AND FOR CARL SEMENCIC MARY IS RIGHT BUT FOR SOME REASON I STILL ENJOY HIS BOOKS

Strangely enough, I like Pit Bulls for Dummies by D. Caroline Coile. The Jaqueline O'Neil book is decent, but the chapters on nutrition, etc. are outdated (at least in my copy). Diane Jessup's books are decent, but I don't care for her as a person. I've actually gotten my best information (besides from experience) from websites like www.pbrc.net, www.badrap.org, and Mary's site, in addition to messageboards.

yeah... and as for the majority of books sold at the bookstore or petstore, whatever, they have the nerve to say that raw and homemade diets are bad and they practically push the commercial dog foods...

Vicki Hearne book, Bandit: A Dossier of a Dangerous Dog I hated that book. I couldn't finish it. She actually didn't seem that fond of pit bulls or know that much about them at all. At least that's how it came across to me.
