Good deals ME!!! Farmers and feeding raw seem to go hand in hand lol!!
I bought a seperate deep freeze just for Marley and Honey! lol...Now I can really stock up when there is a good sale! And my dad bought an extra deer tag just for my dogs so in a few weeks I will have an entire deer headed my way.

Tomorrow I will be feeding Winston his first raw meal. I picked up some chicken hindquarters to start with. I do work on a grocery store, I'm in charge of all the pricing, sales, etc. and a manager. So I get to see all the deals so that will be a huge help. Our store will special order anything for anyone and only charge 10% above cost. It might be worth it to check your local grocery store to see if you can purchase this way. My friends boyfriend is a certified organic farmer, so I am also going to talk to him about getting meat from him.
Hopefully it all goes well. He's had raw meat before, and most recently the boys had turkey neck for thanks giving, so it won't be *too* new!

So i found a place I can buy Chubby some raw petfood that is not poultry filled (since he is allergic to poultry). It is almost the same cost as when i used to buy my last dog her ground turkey ( she was on homecooked). What do you guys think of the offering? They also sell cartilage covered beef knuckle bones and lamb marrow bones. Thoughts? I had to give Chubby a bath this week because his yeasty smell was back big time (blerg!). Not to mention his itchiness too. www.grasslandbeef.com/Categories.bok?category=Pet+Food

Why don't you try full raw with Chubs? I've read about a lot of people's dogs (on the rawfeeding group) that had allergies to certain meats (poultry, beef, etc.) that can eat them raw. I wouldn't offer bones from big animals like like, they're very dense and sooner or later will cause tooth problems. I don't want to sound like a know it all or anything, just passing along the info I've learned from a lot of very experienced raw feeders so sorry if it sounds like preachy at all.

Not preachy at all! No worries, any info is always helpful. I have thought about raw for a while, but since I don't have a very large freezer (tiny 1 bedroom NYC apt) buying 100+lbs of food at a time wasn't in my cards, but with these I might be able to buy twice monthly. Chubby already has some tooth damage (some are chipped and some are worn down) so you think something like the lamb bones would be better vs. beef bones?
I was just thinking about the cartilage because he does have minor arthritis so I thought it might help.

Hmm.. I think full on raw would really help Chubs, I only use my tiny freezer as well (don't want to clean my big one lol) and I only buy about once every 2 weeks. That's for both Aida and Bruiser too. They don't eat much at all (both eat under a pound a day) so it lasts quite a while.
I think lamb bones would be better, I think they'd be softer, but I can't say for certain since I haven't tried them. I stick to pork and chicken for bone as that's the only ones I can get for a good price so far.
I also think there's a good amount of glucosamine in the bones themselves so you may not need extra. I could be wrong on that source though, just thinking off the top of my head...

How do people handle raw feeding when traveling? I don't think my mom likes the idea of feeding raw (grosses her out) and she is the person that usually Chubby-sits if I am out of town.

I haven't had to do this yet but what I would do:
1. Either prepackage meals for him, date and time, that way she can just thaw and and dump into the bowl.
2. Depending on how long you're going to be away (this is one I've considered recently) is feed 2 days worth of food then skip the next. If you're only gone overnight or such.
3. Maybe have the premade stuff as an alternative for stays like that so he doesn't have to go completely off raw but it isn't whole meat that would gross your mom out.
Or if possible take Chubs with you and pack enough food to last the trip, a little smelly won't hurt him lol.
Another thing I've been looking into is having a house sitter come and watch the dogs... Although I have yet to find someone I trust to feed the way I want and keep the dogs schedule so I haven't left town yet lol.

you can feed turkey wing bones since chubs' teeth are not sharp, or buy a grinder and grind it yourself.. i would do full raw for chubbs too with his allergies. lamb and beef bones are more recreational chewing , not for consumption as they are too densse. you can also get bone meal from the health food store and use that too to make sure he gets his calcium/phosphorus, and omas pride sells premade raw with and without ground bones so you can go that route too
for trips i either bought stuff at the local food store once i got there or i fed The Honest Kitchen dehdrayted raw as its powder stuff and you can carry it anywhere.. then just add water and poof dinner is served...

you can also feed other critters, hare-today in PA sells small critters m= so their bones are lighter and can be fed to chubbs. i would join a raw group on , you can split the food with others even if you dont get alot.. there is also Healthypawsllc.net who sells premade raw too i dealt with her and her prices right now are pretty good and she will ship the raw( i have had it shipped it comes on dry ice)

healthypaws is good as well. You can even check with your local pet store as my guy would place an order with healthypaws and have it shipped directly to him. I get my tripe from healthypaws and have always been happy with it.
def. think Chubs would do well on raw and think it is worth a shot.

If I'm not around to feed the dogs, I fix up their portions ahead of time. Only Winston is on raw, and i already have his food frozen into daily portions. All i do in this case is add his supplements to the baggies. I've been known to put the other dogs kibble into bowls with their supplements in order to be sure they've been fed the right amount and given their vitamins/fish oil, then pop it into the fridge with Winnies!
