I thought it might be fun/therapeutic to make a topic with all of the funny/crazy/infuriating things that people have said to and about your dog(s)! Here we go! I'll start with a really bizarre encounter I had today. I was approached by two homeless men on the street a short while ago. Man 1 asked if I had a quarter, I told him that I did not. Man 2 asked, "What kinda dog is that? He's got a head on him, uh?" To which I replied, "He's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and yeah he's got quite a meathead!" He paused staring at Saxon and then said, "A Staffordshire Bull Terrier, uh? What kind of dog is that?" I told him, "The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is basically the smaller British cousin of the American Pit Bull Terrier." While this conversation was happening Man 1 was pacing and mumbling to himself, he was either drunk or had diminished capacity. Man 2 said, "English, uh? Cool." Suddenly, Man 1 swung around to face me and said, "F**k you and your English s**t!" He turned to Saxon, looking him dead in the eye and yelled, "F**K you, you English S**T!!" Then he turned and walked away. Man 2 smiled at me in a way that made me think he was completely oblivious to what his buddy/walking mate had just done and said, "Have a good one," before turning to walk away. All I could muster was a "you, too." Meanwhile, poor Saxon is crouching to the point that he's almost laying on the ground, shaking. I had to pick him up to get him inside. There are some real crazies here sometimes...

^ my blank look made her continue. "He is smaller than mine and has a small head so is he one of those American ones? I have a full Pit Bull at home. He must be an American". me-Ah yeah and American Pit Bull Terrier. her-"Yeah thats what I thought"

Cat, that so scary having some random dude (who you don't know if they are actually crazy) screaming at you. Although since you and Saxon and safe and away from him, I can say I did giggle just a little at the thought this guy got mad at Saxon because "he's English"

I remember you saying that one, CA. I guess our dogs' nationality is important to a lot of people!
I was on my own, but it was in the 7-11/my apartment's busy parking lot, so I wasn't in any real danger. I was more stunned than afraid and once I noticed how afraid Saxon was I got mad. It is a bit funny when you think about it. My poor little Englishman!

Our dogs aren't so good at protecting us. Yeah, the one thing that bothers Jason is that he doesn't think Chubby would protect me in those kinds of situation. wish all the bully haters would see that! Then again, if the dog did protect you then the dog is "dangerous", if the dog doesn't protect you then its a "whimp". Just can't win sometimes. As for stupid things people say, My mom was in our front yard watering the plants with Chubby (it is fenced, its a short fence so he is never allowed outside alone). Two teenage boys walk up to the fence, stick their hands inside to pet Chubby and THEN ask my mom if he is friendly. She says he s but please don't reach over the fence. They pet Chubby, who looooooves attention and comment "Wow, what a p*ssy!" and then walk away. I guess they were hoping to be bitten?

Yeah, I guess this thing has proven Saxon probably wouldn't defend me in an attack.
That one is crazy, Sugar! What were they expecting Chubby to do?

I used to walk Beastley in the late evening usually around 11pm, that was the time I usually got home. One day I walked him during the day, a man came towards me, whom I've never seen before in my life and I've lived here over 4yrs. I love your boy, I've watched you walking him and he walks so well with you. I would like to take him off your hands. I said no thank you, he's not for sale. I turn around and walk the other direction making sure I go more towards a public area and not towards where I live and he goes in another direction. A couple days later, there was a knock at the door, there stood the same man. He goes, I'm serious I will take your pit off your hands. Thank goodness Beastley was locked in his room. My Mastiff was at the door with me. I told him he is not for sale and if you don't leave my property NOW, I will open this door and I will let this dog greet you and he is not as kind. The man backed up and said when you change your mind I'll be around. To say the least I no longer walk him at night.

I took Bella to the vet not too long ago to be spayed and as we are walking in, a woman walks by and says 'oh my what a beautiful dog!' And bends down to pet her. She almost has her hand on Bella's head and asks the question 'what kind of dog is she?' I answered a pit bull, the woman jumped back like Bella suddenly transformed into a tiger and said 'oh, well I won't pet her then.' I said 'yeah, because suddenly she's mean right?' And walked into the office. The entire time, Bella's tail was going so fast her whole butt was wiggling, my vicious lil girl...

That is terrifying! I'm glad you were both ok! Yes it was. Now I don't walk him unless someone is home and the door is open in case there is a problem. I also carry a can of Raid, just in case. Unfortunately we have ended up walking in circles in our cul-da-sak in case there is a problem. He is never allowed out to play unless we are with him. I have this fear this idiot would try to steal him.

Worst I've gotten was when Inara was young, maybe 4 months old, and we in Petsmart wandering. Here's this little white puppy gamboling around and this woman comes up to me and says in a nasty voice, "dogs like that should be shot on sight" and walked away. I was still new to pit bull ownership and was stunned. These days that woman would have gotten an earful. But I've never forgotten that. Nothing like telling somebody that their BABY ANIMAL should be shot on sight. *sigh*
