I went to an adoption event today, this is the second time I went to this event set up at PetSmart. Sadly to say this is also the second time that they displayed at their front door it was a Golden Retriever adoption event. Why lie?
There were so many well behaved pit bulls lining the isles waiting to be adopted or fostered. Kissing and loving on people in the store. Until one person came in with his pit bull. You could tell he had no control over his dog by the way the dog was dragging him.
This dog was seriously DR if not DA, he tried to attack 3 other dogs in his path. (Let alone not having control of his dog). Thank goodness the volunteers and owners were in control of their babies. Why would an owner put his dog in a situation to fail?
I can see taking a dog to places to socialize but a pet store with confined isles and numerous dogs whether they were pit bulls or not is not a place to learn socialization, especially knowing you have no control over your own dog and him having these issues. Sometimes I just want to smack people.UGH!

Why would you put Golden adoption event. DUH if I were looking to adopt a dog I would not be going to a Golden adoption event. I would not even consider it. They are not my preference of breed. And if I were looking for a Golden I would not have an interest in a Pit Bull. That is the oddest choice for that adoption event.

I think they put GR adoption just to get people in the door. I think it's especially wrong because they're advertising "America's Dog" when they really have "America's So-Called Villain Dog". Now I know not everyone thinks that way, but I know a lot of pretentious people who take their perfect breeder dogs to Petsmart just to show off. These people would NOT be interested in a Pit Bull. I'm sure there are lots of other places and other avenues to turbo charge adoptions. Petsmart just ain't one of 'em!
It sucks that the guy didn't realize that he was hurting the adoptions. He probably thought he had such a cool, bada$$ dog and wanted to show him off. It is precisely why I don't bring my dogs into those situations because you never know how much damage you can do with having a dog selective or dog aggressive dog in a multi dog environment.

The GR event dose seem a little odd. I'd be kinda ticked off if I really was looking for a GR and came in to only find Pit Bulls. It would have been a better idea to simply list the event as a 'puppy' or 'dog' adoption event.
As far as PetSmart goes I don't know about the ones in the area were this happened, but I know alot of the stores around here work with the local HS. They get alot of cats there, and everynow and then a few dogs which they host at these events.
While I'm glad that PetSmart is attempting to help by adopting out instead of selling breeder puppies, it might be less stressfull for the pets and the people interested if they did it somewhere other then the store itself.

Like I said it is dumb idea cause someone like myself would not even go to a GR adoption event. Why did they even need to put a breed label on it. THere was one here locally and it was just called an adoption event.

I wouldn't take Bella to one of these events because she's never been in a store and I'm not going to set her up to fail. That poor dog. Did they ask him to leave? I bet it chased away a lot of potential adopters and it probably just made up the minds of some people who are on the fence about pits NOT to get one because they are mean. =(

That is very strange. There two Petsmart store in my area and they just call them adoption events. Granted when some shelter are there every "lab mix" actually looks like apbt mix and other shelters call every dog that looks a little muscular a pit mix, but that's everywhere around here. I saw a guy one time there with a beautiful apbtpuppy and he had a huge chain around his neck that looked like you would tow a car with. Why do people have to be so stupid?

That drives me crazy when people do that to their dogs. Bella wears a little pink collar and I walk her with a nylon leash lol She doesn't give off the 'tuff girl' vibe at all.
