The author of the blog post in the comments on Love and a Six-Foot Leash's FB post about the blog: Just sounded a bit inception-y there...

This is just another symptom of the "self esteem" culture of confident incompetents. Don't feel like studying a breed and its history? No prob! Just redefine it anyway that suits you and makes you feel good about yourself!

Yes indeed and I have been guilty in the past of this; however I chose to educate myself (and continue to do so), more importantly is when you have been exposed to the truth you have to accept it "warts" and all.

This leads to some questions I have for the group concerning rescues. I do contribute and share info about dogs on fb but always w/ a bit of trepidation (and even more so now). I have personal experience via my wife with how much drama and craziness there can be w shelter/rescue groups and even though I know peoples hearts are in the right place things can get twisted. Also, right on about the PB advocacy getting a little crazy, ( i really wish people would stop posting pics of pits and little kids - yes i know how wonderful our breed is and they can be the sweetest things ever but i think in the long run that sending that message might backfire?) Thoughts?

Just redefine it anyway that suits you and makes you feel good about yourself! Yes indeed and I have been guilty in the past of this; however I chose to educate myself (and continue to do so), more importantly is when you have been exposed to the truth you have to accept it "warts" and all. We've all had our spin outs along the learning curve and all have had to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask "are you really making your best effort to learn and grow and step up when no one else can or wants to?" I ended up with Pablo after I kept looking for someone else to ride to hsi rescue and, literally in front of the mirror, asked "how dare you call yourself an advocate of this breed if you let this one die because taking him on is inconvenient!" Yeah, we all come up short at times. But that is a far cry from actually asserting a right to make Pit Bulls out to be whatever you choose them to be, to spit at the notion of educating yourself and sitting down, shutting up and LISTENING as those who know more speak, demanding accolades for your intent regardless of actual effect and then, to top it off, acting like Kim Wolf of AFF and actually accusing the breed knowledgeable people of CAUSING BSL when we are combatting ignorance on ALL fronts, ie BOTH combatting hateful myths promulgated by pro-BSLers and ALSO combatting starry eyed naivete that leads to the sorts of incidents that inspire the next call for BSL.
