Not sure if this is the right section for this post/rant/confusion?
Anyway, when I take Maxine out for walks, particularly if we head into the main part of town I normally get one of three reactions when people learn that she's a pit-mix.
1) The "Oh my God, why would you trust that creature in your home" reaction.
2) The "neutral, a dog is a dog" reaction. In this one, the person dosen't blink an eye, keeps petting Maxine and I find either owns dogs themselves or has been around them alot.
3) Finally The "Why would you get a pit-mix when you could have gotten a real Pit Bull" reaction.
Now this last one really gets on my nerves. I don't give two cents if my dog is a purebred or not. I don't care about bloodlines or red noses or razorbacks.
Mind you I don't have an issue with people who do, just personally it dosen't matter to me.
Today for example, Maxine and I are down by the waterfront, close a local park. It's hot, we stop at a bench for some water and to rest. A guy comes walking up the sidewalk and slows down as he gets nearer.
Him: "Hey, what kind of dog is that!"
Me: "She's a pit-mix. We think with shepherd but she was a rescue so we're not entirely sure"
(Mind you at this point I'm keeping a close eye on Maxine who's entire body is vibrating from her tail up in excitment at the new person who's come to give her attention)
Him: "Is she friendly? Can I pet her?"
Me: "She's friendly, do you mind giving her a treat first?"
I give him one of the training treats that I use, he proceeds to pet her
Him: So I know you said she was a mix, where they all out of real Pit Bulls at the shelter that day?"
Me: (laughing a little) "No, actually I fell in love with her in spite of her pit side at first. I used to be very against owning anything with pit in it. Maxine changed that though."
Him: "Well still, you should get a real Pit Bull now. The mixes make O.K. pets but they don't help the breed"
Me: "Thats alright, I think I'll just stick with her right now. I would'nt have the room for a second dog. Besides I don't really care if she's a mixed breed or not."
Him: "No really, you should get a real Pit Bull, not a mix. You might as well have a shaved labrador if your gonna call her a Pit Bull. You should'nt call her a pit-mix either. Just call her a mixed dog. "
Me: (Rising to go) "Alright, I'll take that into thought. But we have to be going now. It was nice meeting you!"
I kept the smile plastered on my face untill we were out of sight and then bolted though a condo parking lot to get back to the main street.
Really, what is the problem with my dog?!
She gets nailed on one side from people who are afried of half of her, and then that same half makes people who like the breed hate her?
If this was the first time I'd just shrug it off, but I've gotten similar comments in the past.
