Did not know where to put this. OMG Rocky had a close bear encounter today. I am still freaking out. What happened was I was on phone with my mom. I dont even remember if I let Rocky out or one of my kids. We were getting ready to go out. I heard Rocky barking his head off and I realized my 17 yr old son was checking on Rocky I heard him open the front door and tell Rocky to shut up. Rocky was at the side fence which is closest to front door. Next thing I hear is my son screaming get the hell out of here OMG and the door slams and he is frantically yelling "MOM STAY IN THE HOUSE THERE IS A BEAR ON THE FRONT LAWN." I hung up on my mom and my older son is already running out the back to see what is going on I was right behind him. My younger one has always had an anxiety thing about bears so he is freaking out! I get out there and Rocky on inside of fence and bear is right along fence just on other side Running slow with Rocky right beside him. All three of us are screaming for Rocky who looks at us and continues to try to scare the bear. Fortunately it worked because the bear kept going but real slow. My older son got the guts and ran out there in his boxers and got a hold of Rocky. I have never seen Rocky this fired up. He ran back with my son holding him by the collar huffing the whole way. I told him he did a good job at scaring the bear but scared the crap out of me.

So, so scary!! Glad everything was ok!!
I went home for a visit last weekend and when I got home I let Saxon run in the yard to use the bathroom. I went inside and the first thing my mom said to me was, "Be careful out there we had a huge bear in the yard an hour ago!" Needless to say, I did not let him off leash in their yard the rest of my time there!! Bears are scary! Luckily, they are usually also scared and probably wouldn't fight a dog unless they were cornered. I think they are much more likely to run. If we're talking black bears, that is. A grizzly, on the other hand, would probably fight back. And even our bulldogs would have a hard time defending themselves against a Grizzly bear!

you are very lucky the bear didnt go thru the fence and attack rocky.. there have been numerous dog deaths here due to the bears attacking and kiling dogs that bark or go after them. a husky was killed next town over due to a bear attack

Seriously never expected this in the mid morning. When I got home my younger son just finished mowing the lawn and told me the fence in the back was knocked down. Which means that bear may have been in the yard.

bears can kill dogs in an instant. be very careful with rocky outside - cubs are moving around more and mother bears are more protective- it isnt good that bear was running outside the fence keeping up with rocky on the inside fence- that bear should have hightailed it when rocky started barking - by not running away that bear is not afraid of dogs and that is a VERY bad thing

The bear was running away outside the fence but too close for my liking, Rocky was not running fast cause the bear was running slower than Rocky runs. The bear was running back towards the woods. Im not sure which way the bear was going while ROcky was barking at him. Not sure if he was heading away or toward. I hope he was not planning on going back the way the fence was knocked down cause if that is the case he was not afraid of Rocky but afraid of my son screaming. I hope there is not a next time but I am going to be ready with pots and pans and having ammo ready for the Dirty Harry gun. I dont like the idea of shooting an animal but any bear that F's with my dog is getting popped in the Ass. I wonder if blanks will scare him off. The cops have rubber ammo for shotgun I might have to get some of those. they just make the bear run off.

Wow ! That is frightening ! To realize the back fence was down because a bear went into you back yard , scarry !! Do you have motion lights in your yard to light the area for when rocky has to do his business ?
It doesn't sound like the bear was fazed by our son's screams ...so be careful !!

The bears dont usually bother with us. They get scared. I asked my son and when he opened the front door the Bear was walking toward Rocky and staring at my son. When my son screamed the bear got scared and ran. I dont have motion lights. at night I go out there with him and turn on the spot light. Soon we have a dawn dusk very bright street light that we just put up on garage. Once electric is turned on that lights up most of the yard.
