Rocky got out today. I was doing my morning computer stuff I opened the sliding door to get some air. I have been watching him out in the yard since the bear incident. But today he slipped out the doggie door I have in the screen. I heard him go out and even though this morning I had thoughts of opening the slider just a crack so he could not go out without me, I did not listen to my instinct. It is part of his routine to go out and lay on the deck after breakfast. He likes to lay in the sun. But he did not have his breakfast yet I was just finishing up what I was doing and he was whining so when he went out I was relieved that he stopped complaining. I finished up what I was doing and I really cant say how long it was because I got distracted but i feel like it was like an hour. I went out the door and called him he did not come right away so I put his food in the bowl making alot of noise. Still he did not come. I went back out and called him to come eat. No jingles I checked quick to make sure gates not open. Then I figured he must have gone down in my older sons bed (my son had already left for work), He was not there. Now my heart started pounding. Cause I knew if he was anywhere else in the house he would have come running at the sound of food. I checked other rooms. No Rocky. Went back out calling him checking gates when I noticed fence corner knocked down. Crushed. Attachments mangled. Had to be a bear that did it. And I knew Rocky was out there and I started to panic. Not knowing how long he has been out and knowing I was not paying attention I was really freaking out. I ran back to house flew open my younger sons door and screamed get up ROcky got out. My son yelled at me. How could you let him get out and how long was he out and how could you not know how long he was out. Then he flew off in his car in the direction Rocky went the last time he got out at that same spot there was a break in the fence over a year ago. I went out screaming ROCKY. No jingles. I could hear my sons car going up and down Road. BTW we live adjacent to a State Park with tons of acres so I start thinking he is gone and its my fault. I called my mom and told her to go out and look for Rocky because i think he is likely to head down looking for her and Aura. I called police and asked if anyone reported dog at large. It was too early to call ACO so I did not try that first. Police had no reports. My son drove around our area and suddenly I saw his car come down the road I prayed that Rocky was in the car. But when I saw my son get out and storm to house I knew he did not have him. Then he said "great mom, he has got to be in the woods. Im going to look for him" I went in back yard and yelled ROCKY over and over. My son again scolded me and told me that my yelling Rocky in backyard was doing nothing. But then I explained that I was afraid to leave because he might come back. I went out front hoping Rocky would be at the front door. No Rocky. Now I was planning I would be notifying Home Again but first I needed to call the shelter (ACO) just as I hit the shelter in my contacts my cell rang and I heard the voice on other end say come on Rocky. The feeling of relief I cant explain. But I said OH MY GOD MOM YOU FOUND HIM? She said yeah I got him we are walking up the hill. He was apparently just down the street exploring around someones yard. My mom said when he saw her he came all wiggle butt to her from behind a car. She did not even have to call him. But then a man approached walking his dog and when she tried to get the leash on he resisted and ran off to see the dog. THe man said he would keep him there so while Rocky sniffed the dog my mom got the leash on. Good thing the other dog was ok with Rocky sniffing him. Cause Rocky gets nervous if an off lead dog approaches him. Rocky has gotten out on a few occasions but he has never gone that far or in that direction. He gets distracted with sniffing close by and I am usually able to get him. Of course it is garbage day today so Im sure there was plenty of exploring to be done. Crows and vultures to chase. Deer could be passing through, bunnies, and bears. I swear it was so weird, I was sitting looking at email etc when all of a sudden I had this feeling OMG its too quiet, I hope he did not get out. And sure enough he had. My neighbor said to me. WOW what a way to start the day. I said yeah, its a good day because I found my Rocky. We fixed the fence for now. I have a double fence. It wont keep the bear from pushing it down but should keep Rocky in. I intend to go out and hang some kind of decorations from it so I can see from the house if it has been knocked down. It is difficult to see. That is second time this week a bear knocked down our fence. And I did not see it until I got right up to it. Rocky will bolt if the gate is open an inch with a big smile on his face as he runs right past me. The more you call him the faster he runs. I am so glad he gets distracted and does not get too far.
