Today my mom was visiting with her dog Aura. My mom and I came inside briefly to check something on the computer. The dogs were sitting right on the deck. Suddenly a fly kept biting us so I gave my mom a rolled magazine. She got the fly and went to toss it outside. Aura as usual began barking telling my mom off for leaving her. So my mom jokingly and ever so lightly patted Aura on the but with the magazine which she did not mind. But Rocky ran up the stairs and began barking at my mom. Very Very Unusual for him. Barking with not a mean bark but a I am not sure about that. It was actually kind of funny. Then my mom pulled back her arm as if pretending she was going to tap aura again. With that Rocky barked jumped up literally pushed my mom with two paws to the belly and grabbed the magazine and ran off with it. Luckily she did not fall. but surprised her. And me too. I guess he was just protecting his friend. Well later on my husband came home and again another fly was flying around biting so he picked up a magazine and rolled it up to whack the fly. With that Rocky jumped up from laying down and grabbed the magazine right out of his hand. What the heck is with that one? Im not sure if he just wants to play with it or does not like it. He does take it and tear it up. LOL

Barley used to flip out if someone had a rolled up or even folded newspaper. We used to have to shut him in another room if we needed to kill a fly. He'd get really upset and bark his head off. He even nipped Brook in the butt once when he swatted a fly on the wall. Barley was very sensitive to any type of perceived "violence." If Brook would pretend to smack me or even if he stood over me, Barley would go into protection mode and put himself between me and Brook. We tried to be careful about our body language, because he would get so distressed. It was obvious he came from a background with domestic violence and was probably hit himself. Wow, I miss my Barley boy so so much.  |

Wow that is interesting. It is just odd because Rocky is 7, we got him as a pup he was not bothered by anything. Later when my older son came home I told him about it and he went and got a magazine rolled it and started to lightly bop me with it. Rocky calmly came over and took it from him and placed it away on the ground. Then He really pulled his arm back high like he was going to really swing it hard Then Rocky let out a firm bark. so my son lowered his hand and again Rocky calmly took it away. So my son asked me if I trained him to do this today because we never saw this behavior. The only thing I trained him was to take a rolled magazine to give to me especially dropped mail. Maybe he just wants to get the reward for picking up the dropped magazine and is getting annoyed because no one is dropping it? IDK he never had a problem with fly swatting before.
