A co-worker of mine has a 2 yr old fixed male dog, it's a small white terrier/poodle/fluffy mutt.
He has become a naughty dog over the last year. He recently bit (w/out skin break) a stranger while they were on vacation. This was not the first time he's done this.
Vern came to me and asked my opinion. He and his wife were struggling with the decision to put the dog to sleep.
After hearing the stories, I think the dog can be managed since he isn't often left unattended.
The dog gets to go on 2 to 3 walks a day with Vern and his other dog. So he is getting exercise.
I told Vern about DINO, and the yellow flag. He will be tying one onto his leash. He's never acted aggressive on leash, but this will help, I hope give the dog space to be introduced properly to people. Once he meets you his is fine and happy. If he doesn't know you he's barney bad ass, but not always.
I told him when people stop over to visit, even if it is his family that the dogs knows, to put him in a separate room until everyone is settled down. Then let the dog out and either introduce him on leash to new people, or those he doesn't know well... or let him go about his business if it is his family. This gives him a chance to cool off and not act like an idiot out of excitement or frustration.
The vacation bite happened when his wife opened the RV door to get the outside leash to let the dogs out. He jumped out and took off after a passerby. I told him to never open the RV door unless both dogs are leashed, and same goes for the doors at home, car rides etc.
Unfortunately his wife is finding some weird information online. Some where she read that feeding a dog by hand and letting your dog sleep with you can cause aggression. (both of which happens in their home)
I've never heard that before. I told him that feeding a dog by hand teaches a dog good things like you're the most awesome thing in the dogs life since you give it food... and trust, patience etc.
I had no counter advice on the sleeping in the bed thing. I just said if that were the case then the world would be over run with aggressive dogs.
Where can I find them good, honest information that won't scare the crap out of them?
Their dog isn't a snarling little beasitie, yanking at the end of his leash, and I think he does deserve a chance to prove himself. I know Vern will do the work necessary to help the dog, I just need to find the right information.... Instead of Ceser Milans crap etc.
