I too don't think I would choose this dog having small children. There is a dog I am in love with that has been at the shelter for 6 years. Love her but she was not a fit for my mom who was wanting to adot her. She was too strong for her. But we were allowing my heart strings to pull and my mom put in the application and a day before adopting her had to bail. My mom went to walk her daily for a week and day before adopting she was complaining her back was killing her and I said could it be from walking Lucy? Then I even stopped going to walk Lucy which I had done for 3 years on a weekly basis. I still dream of bringing Lucy home. she must be getting old. But now the shelter is her home. she has her own space away from the other dogs. I would gather you will do a great job if you choose to adopt her but with toddlers I think you might be better off with a dog in a foster situation that also has young children. Many of the people on here can help you find a great rescue in your area. I would at least put in for another dog so if this one does not happen for what ever reason you will have started the process and who knows maybe the dog that was meant for you is already waiting to meet you. Good Luck with what ever you choose. I am looking forward to hearing about it.

Oh and one more thing, the people giving you advice are very experienced and Maryellen is one of my go to people for advice for 7 years now since I found her on another forum and found out she lives like 40 min away from me. She has even offered to evaluate dogs for me when my mom was adopting. She has done evaluations for shelters and she has fostered over the years. Her and Mary (Realpitbull) have been instrumental after I adopted my first Pit Bull.

I would like to thank everybody for your input and advise. Our adoption application was approved yesterday. HOWEVER... after much prayer and discussion, we've decided that our precious "Hippo" may not be a good fit for our family. The fear of a scared & nervous dog in a house full of little AND big kids just spells out a recipe for disaster. Caring for everybody as it is, means that I would not have as much time as I would like to be able to spend with a new furry addition, especially one that has been so terribly abused. We are praying that she will find a great home that is quieter and more peaceful than ours. Thank you again.

I think you have made the right decision. I feel she would have a very hard time feeling comfortable and happy in a busy home. The right dog will come along and you'll be glad you waited for the perfect fit!

I too, think you made the right decision with regards to this particular dog. Hoping that the dog finds the right furever home.
The good news is that there are plenty of dogs out there for you! Also, now that you are approved with this particular rescue group hopefully they will keep you in mind for any other dogs that come along better suited for you and your family and you will be able to check in with them too.

Ditto, I am glad we were all able to help you in your decision. Now you are approved to adopt so you can continue to wait for the right pooch for your family. To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven!
