We bet you’ve heard that playgroups are an excellent form of enrichment, socialization, and stress-relief for shelter dogs. But did you know that you can’t accurately predict which dogs are good playgroup candidates based on their breed or breed mix, their behavior on leash or their behavior behind a barrier (such as in their kennels)? The only way to determine which dogs will succeed in a playgroup is to get to know them as individuals. To learn more about this, check out this interview with Aimee Sadler (one of a three part series), creator of the Success Through Socialization program: You can view the other videos and read playgroup materials, here: www.animalfarmfoundation.org/pages/PlaygroupsPart 3 of 3: Playgroups Interview w/ Aimee Sadler vimeo.com Vimeo is the home for high-quality videos and the people who love them.

I think she has done a lot to tear down myths about pit bulls and given shelter staff the motivation to socialize/exercise dogs.. and that's a good thing for the adoptability of pit bulls. At the same time, this is SO f'ng dangerous. Very few people have her talent for dog management... and the large playgroups people are putting together are just dogfights waiting to happen.

This is what AFF posted on their facebook page along with what Mary posted above. "We bet you’ve heard that playgroups are an excellent form of enrichment, socialization, and stress-relief for shelter dogs. This can be a recipe for disaster! Getting to know them as individuals does not always translate into how they are going to act in a playgroup.
