I posted this on the group list, but I couldn't NOT post her here too. We're looking for a very special home for Mrs. Happy Golda Fawn, someone who will work with her and take her into the field of therapy work. She would be truly amazing at this and after you read her story I'm sure you will agree. Golda [ or "Mrs. Happy Golda Fawn" as we have so lovingly chosen to call her] is the newest addition to our adoption program. Golda was found on the side of the road by a good Samaritan. Her lips were gone, feet so swollen that she couldn't walk and skin missing on her back side. She was in the process of dying. Her angel picked her up and took her to the vet where she was treated and released to a shelter in upstate SC. She had been in the shelter since May, healing nicely, and we were contacted about taking her in August. It took us a little more than a month to find the right foster home for her, but we did it and we couldn't be more pleased. Golda has come SO far... from God only knows what kind of life, to being a shining star and a real inspiration to so many people. Her temperament is absolutely stellar and our hope for Golda is to see her become a therapy dog. She really is a testament to how amazingly forgiving these dogs can be. We've contacted STAR (Southeastern Therapy Animal Resources) and are crossing our fingers that we hear back from them soon with good news... I really pray that they'll at least test her for their program. - UPDATE: STAR has invited us to attend a seminar in November and they've asked us to bring Mrs. Golda along. Golda's still got a long way to go as far as healing physically goes. She's been in our program for a little more than 3 weeks now and the vet tells us that she may have to have her bottom right k9 extracted. See, she's missing teeth due to the neglect she endured and that tooth is now rubbing her gum's where her top right k9 *should* be. She also suffered from a severe case of heartworms (and has been treated), and the vet thinks there may have been some damage to her heart as a result. Right now she's on antibiotics for the gum irritation and will go back to the vet when she finishes her meds for chest xrays and to discuss options for her tooth. You can read more about Golda on her petfinder profile and our blog (we update regularly). :-) www.petfinder.com/petnote/displaypet.cgi?petid=11721821nhpbr.blogspot.com/Golda - May 2008 Golda - July 2008 (Still in the shelter but looking SO much better) Golda now with her foster friends and kid. (This picture was taken last Saturday - Sept. 2008) Golda soaking up the sun and loving life FINALLY! (Sept 2008)

Meeting her is like finding your soulmate dog! Golda shines in SO many different ways and I can't wait to snag some more pictures of her at our event tomorrow! She's been in our program for a month now and has won over a lot of people. I expect her to steal the hearts of MANY more tomorrow She's so polite and asks for permission to get in your lap and get attention. A total LOVER

I would love to see more pix of her Well, I don't think I'll be able to post NEW pics because lo and behold, it's raining today and won't let up until the afternoon from what I hear. I don't know how this event is going to go at all Here's a link to a slide show of some of Golda's pics though:

Ohhh her mouth looks soooo ouchie What event are you guys doing today? Sorry it's raining, it's sooo nice here in NJ today (not to rub it in, sorry! LOL) We've been having some really stellar fall weather. Just bracing myself for the crappy winter. Who's the Bullmastiff (?) in the pix?

Yeah, her mouth was pretty inflamed that day because she's missing some teeth and that one canine tooth has been gnashing her gums. I want to look at her some more today to see if the antibiotics helped at all and if not, she's probably going to have to lose her bottom canine too. We're just doing a basic meet and greet to get out in the public eye and let them meet our dogs. Rain is SO not conducive to passing out good educational materials though. Ick! And the Bullmastiff is Golda's foster sibling Such a cool dude.

Okay, so to update.. October 24th, Golda's foster mom called me up to tell me that we needed to come get Golda. She left her and the older Frenchie out in one of the outdoor kennels at her job (she's a groomer) for a few minutes doing I can't remember what now. Apparently, Golda and the Frenchie got into over God knows what. Golda's snout was all bit up and supposedly Golda was shaking the Frenchie and gave him some puncture wounds. So, I went to the pet store, got some supplies for Golda and brought them back to my office. She would have to stay there with me taking time out to come visit and spend time with her. By about 8PM my coworker called me up and said they were going to pick up Golda and watch her and that they couldn't stand leaving her alone in the office. I'm not complaining because I didn't like it either, but she was safe. What we found out from her previous foster home is that the day before the "tiff," Golda managed to break out of a chain link kennel run while her and her daughter were taking a nap. God only knows why she was out there and not safely crated. She started limping after getting out of the kennel. So, its very likely that Golda was being prodded into playing and had to defend herself because no one was there to tell the Frenchie to knock it off. Anywho, by the time Sunday rolled around, my coworker called to let me know that her limp hadn't gotten any better. I went to visit her and there wasn't much to be seen about why she would be limping. We decided to get her into the vet on Monday. The vet told us when they looked at her, to have her foot soaked in epsom salt since there was some pus coming from her foot. They gave antibiotics for it as well. She got dewormed and we were also given some wipes for her face because it "looked" to them to be a fungal infection. We were instructed to keep her separated from the other dogs and wash hands and such after messing with her since it could be contagious. Well, since then, her face has started clearing up, but she would alternate between her two front feet on limping on them and then not limping at all. On Friday, I went over for another visit and to let the dogs out and Golda's feet, all FOUR were swollen like clubs. Weird welts were all over her body but because it was dark, I couldn't tell just how bad. My coworker was running a booth at the fair here so I sent her a message letting her know what I saw. After talking to her this morning, Golda was NOT like that Friday morning and that her back feet swelling is a new development, along with the welt like spots all over her back. It looks like the fungal infection, if that's what it is, is moving off of her head now and onto her back. I went and visited again this morning before our event and got pictures and she looks like absolute hell So, we're going to try a bath with the chlorihexiderm shampoo and epsom salt for the feet in the tub so she can sit if she wants to tomorrow. Monday, she's going straight into the vet again. My heart is absolutely breaking for this girl because she doesn't deserve this and I have NO idea what the hell could be causing this and I just want it to go away. I want her to be better and not look so miserable. She's even getting pustules on her belly and her one hanging teat seems to be swelling too. If you aren't keen on yucky pics, don't read any further. She IS going to the vet first thing Monday. My coworker is going to try to keep soaking her feet in the mean time in a pot as opposed to compresses this time. I'm supposed to go help her tomorrow with getting her in the tub and letting the epsom soak that way to her feet and then bathe her with the shampoo. I feel like crap for not checking on her sooner Sometimes things like this make me really wonder about people and what they say they are doing I wish I could bring her home with me and watch her and know that her sheets are being changed, that she's getting those meds, that she's getting her feet soaked long enough and so that I can hold her and rub her face and neck and belly and give her her human lovies like she wants. Not saying that my coworker isn't doing these things, but I'd feel better if she were in MY hands She's miserable and its killing me And we desperately need more donations to come in and the holidays really are hindering a lot for us right now it seems. *sigh*

OH jeeeeez, poor thing. You'll have to let me know what the vet says. Skin stuff kills me.
See this is why I am PARANOID about foster homes; I think the only way I'd be able to sleep at night is if I kept everyone home with me.

I thought it looked fungal-y. I hope this round works out! I wonder if a homeopathic yeast control treatment would help?

Check out your drug store with the regular yeast infection treatments. One brand is AZO, but there are several others. I'm not sure if Hyland's makes a yeast product, but I've had really good luck with their allergy formula for my foxhound Bonnie.

LOL I know I'm totally immature for this but I can't help cracking up at the thought of buying yeast infection treatments for a pooch! I have no doubt it works and I think it's a fantastic idea. The mental image just makes me chuckle lol
