Dog trainer Michael Rosenberg faces charges of animal cruelty.
Mercer County Prosecutor's Office
PRINCETON — A Princeton man facing charges he beat a dog and caused its death rejected a plea deal today, saying he is innocent and wants to take the case to trial.
Michael G. Rosenberg, 31, was hired by a Lawrence woman in August to train her 3-year-old German shepherd mix dog named Shyanne. The dog died after suffering four broken ribs, one of which punctured a lung, prosecutors said. The owner, Tracy Stanton, sought charges against Rosenberg after a necropsy on Shyanne showed that the dog suffered blunt force trauma.
Rosenberg’s attorney James Wronko said his client rejected a plea offer from the state at a hearing in Superior Court today.
“We are not interested in any plea offers,” Wronko said. “It is just a matter of getting ready to set a trial date, as far as we are concerned.”
The offer from the state would have been for Rosenberg to plead guilty to animal cruelty in exchange for the five-year prison sentence to run concurrent with a four-year suspended sentence he is serving for an unrelated charge.
If convicted, Rosenberg faces a maximum of five years in state prison and a $15,000 fine.
Rosenberg was indicted by a grand jury in February.
After Stanton brought the charges against Rosenberg, who was working as a dog trainer, another dog owner came forward with similar allegations.
In charges filed by a Montgomery woman, she said that in May he allegedly beat her bull terrier Ziggy at her home.
It also has been alleged that Rosenberg beat his own dogs over a period of several months, according to Mark Johnson, Princeton animal control officer.
Rosenberg was convicted in 2011 on child endangerment charges after engaging in sexual activity with a juvenile. He is a registered sex offender.
