Most of you probably saw this on FB already. Seems like everyone was talking about it because of the Pit Bull reference.
The victims of the tornado that ripped through Moore, Oklahoma, on May 20 have already lost so much. Many who escaped with their lives saw their homes reduced to rubble, but counted their families' health and safety among their blessings. Then, news reports told of looters coming from as far as Virginia, New York, and California to steal what few remaining items of value the victims had left after the destructive storm.
And now, one family who survived the tornado is suffering a new tragedy. A 5-year-old storm victim and his 2-year-old sister were staying with family friends in Jessieville, Arkansas, while his parents stayed behind in Moore to clean up and begin rebuilding after the tornado. On Sunday, the child who survived a violent storm was killed in a vicious dog attack at the home where he was staying.
Police say the child was upset and crying or having a temper tantrum when the 150-160 pound bullmastiff came in from another room and attacked. The dog's owner, Lynn Geiling, was attempting to comfort the child prior to the attack, and she told police she tried desperately to pull the dog off of the boy. By the time she was able to do so, the boy had already suffered serious lacerations to the head and neck. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Police say the animal may have interpreted the child's cries as a sign of aggression and may have attacked in an effort to defend its owners.
The dog ran away after the attack, but was recovered Monday. Animal control will likely euthanize the animal. Investigators have not yet determined whether the dog's owners will face criminal charges.
Breeders of bullmastiffs say the dogs make excellent watchdogs because they are not vicious by nature but are fiercely loyal. These dogs are known as "The Silent Watchdog" or "The Gentle Guardian."
Bullmastiffs are not typically included among the most dangerous dog breeds, which include pit bulls, rotweillers, dobermans, and other dogs frequently trained to attack. In Oklahoma, pet owners may be held liable for injuries from dog bites or attacks.
The heartbreaking loss of this young child is a devastating blow for a family already reeling from the devastation of the Moore tornado.
