It's super easy to make vegan soap. Just use the "holy trinity" of soap oils - olive, coconut, palm- and water or tea for your liquid. The simplest vegan soap is actually a castile soap, just 100% olive oil, lye, and water. You can make it yourself!

How do you make it be soap?

When dissolved lye reacts with oil, it is called "saponification". Measure out exact amounts, combine at just the right temp., and soap happens! I may have oversimplified a bit, but that's basically it.
Too many people get on the "label bandwagon", in other words, they use words that yes, are true, but are not exactly special. For a vegan soap, it's as easy as leaving out animal fats or milk. Imagine making chocolate chip cookies, and just leaving out the chips. The cookie is not any more difficult to make because you left out an ingredient. And typically, someone who claims to only make vegan soaps actually charges more than a non-vegan, for no reason except that she is marketing it as specialty.
I'm kind of a stickler with calling people out by trying to mislead their customers. I called someone out the other day because they had NO ingredient list or size on their label, both of which are FDA requirements. Can you imagine if someone was deathly allergic to a nut oil and had no idea their soap contained sweet almond or peanut oil?
Yeesh...I should maybe get off my soapbox now...pun intended!

I don't think it's vegan, but I am friends with the owner of villaness.net and used to be in love with her mudslide soap. One night I was drinking and got a little tipsy and decided I needed 12 bars of soap and to compose and epic love letter in my checkout notes.
She still teases me about that on livejournal

I've done similar, so I totally can relate to this story I wanna try to make soap, but I'm afraid I'll blow up the kitchen. I am very particular about soap because I have super sensitive skin and I can't handle fake and perfumey stuff anymore, and of course I like to buy vegan. Allison, I forget, do you make any vegan soaps? I should just order some from you. Or are you holding off on soap making right now with the move and stuff?

I'm soaping in overdrive right now! 1. Christmas. 2. I don't want to move all this crap!
Sure, I can make a vegan soap. All I have to do is sub out the milk for something else...water, coffee, tea, beer (etc.)
I do have some essential oils here, too. Most times I use fragrance oils for diversity and cost savings, but I do have Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Grapefruit EO's and more.
My only requirement is a 5 bar min. purchase for special orders. Each 10 oz bar is usually $6, but I can do 5 for $25 plus shipping.

Ok cool, because I can actually give some of these as Xmas gifts. What would be a good sub for milk? I like the idea of some sort of tea. The batch of five would be one EO, right? I think lemon sounds yummy.

I think lemon sounds yummy. I could blend them, too. Citrus doesn't have great scent staying power, so I'd actually recommend it be anchored with a lavender or other non-citrus EO. Michele, yes, pumpkin is going down this weekend!

Mary, what about a chamomile infused lemon lavender? It'll be good for sensitive skin because of the chamomile, but will smell like lemon & lav. I have all these chamomile buds that I don't know what to do with because I don't care for the scent!
For the liquid, I can use chamomile tea or black tea as well.
It will be a 100% coconut oil salt soap that will also last 3x as long as regular bar soap. I make exclusively salt bars these days.
Give me your thoughts or approval and I can have them made today.
And Michele, I made a bar scented with Pumpkin Apple Butter with real pumpkin pie filling from our Distillery's Pumpkin Spice liquer. Will be ready in 4 weeks!

The ones I just listed aren't ready yet. Once they are, I'll post 'em up. The Body Buttercream is my best lotion formula to date. It is so rich!
