Training from Core to Complex: The Many Faces of the Modern Trainer
May 31-June 1, 2014
White Plains, NY
Early Bird Registration discounts ends today - April 1.
Join Ken Ramirez for a full weekend seminar that will examine core training
principles that are often forgotten or overlooked, including some practical
skills games that help build trainers. These will include an understanding
the role of science, exploring various shaping techniques, the use of
desensitization, the role of targeting in training, and a look at the
importance of consistency and reinforcement strategies. After setting the
table with some basic training skills that every trainer should know and
understand, he will move in the opposite direction and discuss complex and
seldom used or understood tools such as: Keep Going Signals, End of Session
Signals, No Reinforcement Markers, Jackpots, Recall signals, and so many
others. In addition to sharing these basic and advanced tools, Ken will
discuss some of the unique ways these tools can be used in distinctive and
diverse ways in conservation projects and to aid in consulting work.
Core Training Tools & Practices - No matter how experienced a trainer may
be, one must always go back to basics and remember some of the key aspects
to successful training. This seminar is meant as a reminder to the
experienced trainer about the many things that we often overlook or forget
when training. Although appropriate for the beginner, Ken will look at each
topic with a fresh perspective and a unique point of view with an eye toward
helping those with experience think about these topics in a new way.
Complex Tools - This seminar will look at a potpourri of topics that are
sometimes not explored in great depth. Ken will look at the practical
aspects of these tools and look at the science behind each of them. These
may include, but are not limited to: Keep Going Signals, End of Session
Signals, No Reward Markers, Least Reinforcing Scenario, Recall Signals,
Jackpots, Behavior Chains, Release Signals, Differential Reinforcement
Strategies, and Adduction.
Social Animals - Ken has worked with exotic animals for more than 35 years
and used specific strategies for introducing dangerous animals to each other
and followed strict protocols which assisted in teaching these animals to
live successfully together. In 2013, he took on a dog project with a number
of aggressive and reactive dogs and used the same techniques he had used
with exotic animals to teach these problematic shelter dogs to live
together. This seminar will outline the strategies and techniques needed to
train animals to live and work together.
Conservation Training - One of Ken's passions in the past decade has been to
use his training skills to assist in conservation projects with animals
living in the wild. In this brief seminar he will share some inspiring
stories about unique uses of positive reinforcement training to assist in
helping wildlife.
Consulting Skills - Ken frequently likes to tell people that a successful
animal training consultant doesn't need to be good with animals! He says
this in jest, because animal skill are certainly required to be a training
consultant, but this seminar will look at those other skills that frequently
trip up good trainers, including people skills and organizational abilities.
Ken will share stories from his consulting practice to give the attendees
pointers and suggestions that will assist them in being better trainers.
