We all know it happens. However, what is the timeline? I say it can take two weeks to even a year depending on the dog . A rescue person is telling me that no way can it take 4-5 months for a dog to show its true colors and that the honeymoon period is a few weeks.
Thoughts? Anyone have dogs that took longer then a few months to come out?

I think if you have a dog from a bad situation it could take longer for it to show its true colors. Griffin, the pit bull was one of those that took a long time to come around for his owner. Then she needed more help to get him over some rough patches. Rhett was another one that took awhile to come out of his shell.

Its been 2 years with Louie to settle. Granted, he's special for many reasons and I didn't expect his true self for a long time considering his history.
Buster didn't settle in and show us his ball fetching, total goofball, idiodic self until several months into being here. And he is as close to "normal" as I have. It also took home about a year to show us that he's a clothes and blanket re-arranger...
And Roxy definitely "blossomed" at around 1 year here as far as true colors. We knew she was fearful very soon into it but a lot of her neurosis didn't show until later. That being said, she was our first dog and we could have missed things, and we adopted her at 1.5yrs so age could have also been a factor for her.
Other dogs I've fostered have taken anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months for their true colors to show.

Sadie my gsd took 6 months to show her true personality. Sonny my rottx that i had took two weeks. Most rescue dogs too depending on genetics take each individual time. I tried telling this rescue person that just because a dog spends 3 nights with them doesnt mean squat. Keep the dog for a few months and then come back to me with true personality. I am glad i am not the only one who agrees it can take time depending on the dog

The rescue dogs I've had always took about a month (but were always started on a shutdown). Some I had for many months and their were no note able changes in behavior.

Six months for Ivan, many years ago; six years for Lola, regrettably. Some of my dogs didn't change. There's really no way of knowing.
