Hi everyone. New to the site but joined for really 1 reason..I have a 2 year old female blue pitbull(Roxy).
About 18 months ago she got an "ear infection". A few hundred later I was sent out the door and told to keep clean with solution and then apply drops for 10 days. It didn't work. Went back to different vet and told the same exact thing. No change in her ears. It's been miserable. The discharge is a dark brown color, smells awful and is almost always there.
I clean them daily, solution, alcohol to help where she's scratched them raw and then medicate with drops. I've switched all her food to grain/gluten free, treats are also grain/gluten free, and that's all she gets. I've given her allergy meds but NOTHING helps. The "infection" will go from 1 ear to the other and then both then magically disappear for a few days. Nothing in her world changes and then it comes back.
I heard it was a possible yeast infection so I treated for that too and to no avail.
I really need help. Vets I've visited do not seem to care, say the same vague diagnosis and then act stumped when it doesn't work.
I know someone else has seen this and knows how to treat. Please help me. Thank you

Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about Roxy's ear problems. Sounds like yeast infection- just wondering has your vet swabbed the ear and looked under microscope? Does she have any other allergies- chewing on paws or any staining on paws? As far grain free for allergies I think that is a good idea however, all kibble can contribute to skin allergies. You can consider a raw diet. What medication were you given was it mometamex? I can tell you that I have had good results with a Dermapet malacetic ulta. It was recommended by a holistic vet. Also had success with Zymox ear cleansers. You can search the net for best price but this is the product. www.vetdepot.com/malacetic-ultra-otic-cleanser-8-oz.htmlwww.entirelypets.com/malaceticultraflush2oz.htmlZymox can be purchased on Amazon.

She needs a blood test to check for environmental allergies - reoccurring ear infections is an allergy issue. Get a new vet who will take blood and send it out to either HESKA or ELISA for allergy testing... Once the results come back you can then treat the cause.. You can also find a board certified dermatologist and have the gunk in her ears tested to find out what type of bacteria it is. Bacteria becomes resistant after a bit with meds if its deep in the inner ear....
