Ok, so for the last four months Chubs has been great in his crate, generally lying down and just going to sleep. For the last two days though, things have taken a 180! He now 'argues' with you if you put him in the crate while you are getting dressed, and he is doing his darnest to escape (we are talking bent bars!). I've tried wrapping the crate door in old choke-chains (the only thing they are good for now, lol) and even extra leashes but it still won't help. My brother set up his smartphone to record, set it in the room and left (just to see what was going on because Chubs won't try it if you are in the room with him). Well, he is smushing his boulder-like head and bending the bars and at one point even got his head free and then pulled it back in (which of course prompted us to put more reinforcements). This literally all started about two days ago. What is up with my Chubs?!

he is more comfortable in his surroundings ... start feeding him EVERY meal in his crate.. reward for going in crate, basically pretend he is a puppy and re crate train him from the beginning and pretend he has no idea what a crate is..

All his meals are already in the crate (have been since day one of having him). Anytime I give him a toy or a treat its always in the crate. If he goes in the crate to eat his treat or chew on his toy I praise him a ton.

Between chewing up my winter boots, chewing up my cell phone, being all nutso in the crate and being more of brat about giving stuff up his naughty-factor is skyrocketing!! We still pratice NILIF, but he has been given more freedom (not on leash in the house, more freetime in house) and he's been behaving very well. Still not allowed on furniture, still not given table scraps off anyone's plate, and still has to at least sit to get any treats (minimum, lately I have him do about two sets of puppy push-ups for treats, my folks just make him sit). I figure the boots were my fault because I didn't close the closet door properly, but he was a brat about my phone because it was on my belly while I was napping. Oh, that naughty brat of mine.

Ah, the honeymoon period is over.
It happens quite often, so don't beat yourself up. Like ME said, they get a little too comfy and start being brats. Snorts is definitely the same way. He was so calm and quiet at first...now his nickname is "Mr. Bad." It's mischievious stuff like Chubs is going...eating things he shouldn't, protesting the crate, etc. Show him that brats aren't allowed! lol

Yeah, today I'll be taking him for longer trots, and tonight he starts his first day of clicker training at Wag the Dog! Hopefully this will help my bratty boy ease up on the naughtiness or else I swear I'll make him work for every last bit of kibble! LOL Sit, kibble bit. Sit, kibble bit. Sit, kibble bit....should only take a hour to feed him, lol.

So I saw his crate this evening after being in there for most of the day (he was given pee breaks by my brothers, but I dont fully trust that they will watch him so I ask that they crate him even if they are home). Well, He has almost busted the door and bars all around are bent from him shoving his nose through them (I can tell because his nose is red and missing fur now). I am really at a loss at what to do to keep him from completely destroying his crate. help?

Yikes if possible I would set up a camera so you can check on him while away. Im worried he will get stuck. Cant think of a solution right now. Other than when Rocky was younger and had to be in the crate for more hours than usual. I would freeze congs and marrow bones. Give him one when I left. then have a friend stop by to walk/exercise him. Back to crate with a new frozen kong or marrow bone. Raw marrow bone from the grocery store. They are cheap and I would refill them after emptied.

Oh yeah one more thing. I think Chubs would be awesome at frisbee since he loves toys. Get him a hyperflite Jawz. they dont break. I have had mine for years. and when edges get rough I dremel them. Rocky is not a toy crazy boy he has learned to catch it but could care less about playing. Only plays for food. Sounds like chubs would be obsessed in a good way with catching it. If I were you I would get 2 because you would need the other to trade to get him to bring the other back. You can play on a long lead. I believe this could tire him out good. I buy the jaws ugly since it is cheaper. for some reason I am having problem with website store so here is main link search Jawz ugly skyhoundz.com/

I know I posted this before somewhere but I had the same problem when I first got Harley. The first crate I had for her was the all metal crate and she would push all the clips out with her big old block head and would manage to slide the tray part out….she was constantly figuring a way out of there. Inevitably I had to switch to the big vari kennel as the lock is much more secure and for some reason she seemed to feel more safe in that type of crate. .
In any event I now give her rescue remedy or spray her cage with the DAP spray before I leave. Also going to give the product calm shen a whirl. I would also do as the others suggested. I know the weather is getting hotter out now but if you get Chubs nice and tired before he goes in his cage that would def. help him as well.
Carolann I used to stuff kongs with peanut butter and stick them in the freezer and throw them in her cage…and she loved them. However, after repeatedly freezing the kongs they would start to crack. Did you ever have this problem?

No I did not have that problem with the kongs but I was not going to work every day I am a stay at home mom therefore it may have only been once a week that if that that kongs were in freezer. I also had some no name types from wallmart that were of a harder rubber. The marrow bones were more of a favorite to Rocky than the kong anyway.

I wouldn't know where to take him swimming NYC every morning. Honestly though, I wish I did! I really want to take him to a beach someday but a)I don't know any that allow dogs b)being sans-car means I have to beg around and c) I know a lot of people just let their dogs off-leash and that scares me a bit right now since I don't fully know him yet. I looked up some swimming pools in Manhattan but they are all super pricey!

So my younger brother was about to leave for work when he heard a lot of banging froming from my room. He goes in and finds Chubs had wedged his snout between the crate bars and his teeth prevented him from pulling his snout back into the crate (he was essentially stuck!). My younger brother managed to break some of the bars (he's really strong) and freed Chubs. Chubby had scraped up his nose and muzzle a bit so my brother cleaned it out (broke out his gloves and everything, he's an EMT). I told him to just leave Chubs locked in my bedroom (he is much calmer that way) for now. Recently I claned up my room a ton so there aren't boots or socks or anything laying about and he has a Kong stuffed with pumpkin. I'm going to try really hard to get out of work early, but OMG you guys!! This was a really scary call, I mean what if my brother hadn't been home or hadn't heard the commotion? I thought he was tired this morning because our walk was at a brisk pace for 1 hour and 20 minutes, he wore a backpack with a full bottle of water on each side and we practiced our training to get him mentally tired too. By the time we got home from the walk this morning he was pretty much dead-tired (he even tried to stop along the sidewalk and wanted to just lay down). My heart is racing from the possibilities of what could have gone wrong!

my Tyson actually made it out of his kennel..I came in from work, the kennel was still locked and he was waiting at the door for me with his adopted sister! There was blood everywhere, but I never found a scratch...they had totally destroyed the house, and I still can't keep him locked in, he's always gotten treats for going in, but he manages to break through any reinforcements I've come up with.....They're my babies but have become sooo destructive lately, I don't know what to do to regain my alpha status of our home....

+1 on the rescue remedy. Google. "Through a Dog's Ear" i play this for Jackie. my trainer recommended it.
I started with a flip video to record and watched when i got home. Now i moved to a logitech camera & software that i can watch from any pc or smart phone realtime.
I notice that with Jackie, she gets rammy if i dont do her jog or walk in the AM. It has just been ice/snow covered here, so it isnt safe for either of us to run/walk.
She is certainly getting bratty as we get to know each other. as you can tell from my posts as of late. But it comes and goes. She started with not listening to basic NILF stuff, so she got nothing. Once she gave into that, she seemed to try new stuff out.

one more thing..my sig other has a hard time subscribing to NILF, since she's never home and loves to love the love bug. So I'm NILFing her from Jackie until she learns just kidding on NILFing her, but it does seem to me to make it harder in the long run if we're both not consistent.
