I need your help. My husband and I were going to church yesterday and saw a pit and pit mix running loose through the south end of town. We headed on to church and decided to go back. These 2 had no collars and were eating roadkill and out of a garbage can. So we pull up and there's this guy standing on his porch and I though mabey they were his dogs. My husband got out and talked to him and they weren't his and he did not know who they belonged to. We loaded them up in the car and took them to the local shelter. My husband told the guy we were doing so if anyone came to look for them. They were both so sweet, loving, and well behaved. Both females, no collars, seemed so hungry, dehydrated, the one looked like it may have had a litter recently, and she had scatched on her face. We got them to the shelter and the animal control guy said it looked like they had been roaming a while. The problem is the local shelter is a kill shelter and it was Sunday morning at like 9:00 and we didn't know what else to do with them. Our goal was get them safe and get them fed. So they will hold them for 3 days to see if they are claimed and then put them through temperment testing, then put them up for adoption. My husband and I are wanting to be ahead of the game just in case they do not get adopted. Which there are already a lot of pits at the shelter if you look at petfinder. I sent an email to Don't Bully My Breed yesterday and have not had a response. We want to help them or get them fostered if they can't get adopted, but we do not know where to start. Do you guys have any suggestions or know people in Illinois I could call. We would be willing to transport them and pay for vaccinations. We have two of our own and a cat. Between us both working full time we don't think we could take anymore pets on, but if it were life and death we would do what we had to. Please help!!!!

Don't Bully My Breed is a wonderful resource in Illinois. But like all rescues right now, I'm sure they are overwhelmed with requests. I'm in Illinois, but I can't accept any dogs right now either. You might try Reach Out Rescue in Chicago and Midwest Rescue of Illinois. Both are good groups. There's also Chicagoland Bully Breed Rescue, although I don't know anything about them. It's so bad out there right now, and everyone is way over capacity with homeless dogs and cats.

Thanks Suzi. I've sent an email to Reach Out and a voice mail to Midwest. Don't Bully Me Breed called me back and of course they are full. They are willing to help, but I think it would be up to us to foster. I will do anything I can for these two, but I also have to think of my 2 dogs also. My husband and I both work and he's out of town sometimes(he builds houses). So it's up to me a lot to take care of our 2 dogs, cat, and 6 year old. I know I could do a foster temporarily, but who knows how long temporary would be. I hope these 2 can be adopted, but I'll keep trying to find an option if they cannot.

Jen from Midwest Rescue of IL called me. She said if we can get pics and temperament descriptions of both of them that she can get their info out there to get them fostered. I called the shelter to get that information and the guy I talked to was going to put me through to the animal control officer's voice mail which I said "no" he can't help me. I had talked to him yesterday and he said he would pass my phone number on to his supervisor IF they are going to be adopted out which I do not plan on adopting them, but left it at that. I asked if they fostered and he did not know. So I told this kid on the phone I need to talk to someone to see if they would work with a rescue and he said he had never heard of a rescue that takes pit bulls. ???? Are you kidding me???? Anyway, he had the director callme back and she was not aware of any taking pits. I told her Midwest does not have a facility, but will try to get fosters if we have more info and pictures of the dogs. She was like "oh are they licensed?" Which I told her I don't know. I gave her Jen's info and I will follow up with Jen a little later to see if the director called her. I guess they wouldn't release them to me to foster even if I could because you have to have a license/permit to foster. I seriously had no idea. She said they have a few really sweet pits there that need adopted and would I be upset if they could get them rescued instead of the 2 I brought in. They are labeling the one as a shepherd mix and the other as a pit. I think the Shepard is the pits daughter by the resemblance.

So I told this kid on the phone I need to talk to someone to see if they would work with a rescue and he said he had never heard of a rescue that takes pit bulls. ???? Are you kidding me???? I wish I could say that this surprises me. AC facilities are often full of people who know absolutely nothing about either animals or rescue, let alone pit bulls and pit bull rescue And yes, Midwest Rescue is licensed. They're actually a pretty good sized organization. I'm so glad they got back to you. I don't know about AC wanting to send them different dogs than you called about, though. Of course we want all dogs to be adopted, but the point of you doing this was to specifically help the dogs you found.

Yes I am not sure either about them wanting to send different dogs then the ones you brought in and you are trying to get out of there! Like Suzi said of course we want all dogs to be adopted but you contacted them about the two specific dogs you found.

That's why I get so frustrated with the way things are done. I know the shelter is probably doing the best they can especially given the circumstances with what they face day to day, but I just have trouble accepting that more can't be done. Why can't they educate more, make a foster program, make stiffer penalties for those who don't care of their animals. I know it's easy for me to say, but sometimes you gotta think outside the box and change they way things are done to make them better.

Jen with Midwest rescue is so awesome! She talked to the director of the shelter and if the dogs past temperment evaluation today they will go up for adoption and the director will get their info to Jen who get their pictures and information out there. She has kept me posted on everything and has been really helpful. Also, my brother in law knows someone who might want to adopt the pit. These people rscued a male 4 years ago and are interested which is no guarantee, but it's someting. I also called the director back at the shelter and thanked her for being willing to work with Midwest and she thanked me for letting her know about them. Jen said she's already posted some other dogs there on her facebook page. I'll let you know when pictures are up.

New update! The shephard/pit mix has been adopted! The pit is still up for adoption. The shelter has given the animals there Halloween type names due to the time of year. They gave her the name "Fright". Not exactly a good name for a pit, but oh well. Hopefully she will be adopted soon too.
