www.rawdogranch.comGreat source of info, they have a nifty spreadsheet that if you know the %'s of meaty bones, organ, ect that you want to feed it will calculate the amounts for you of lbs and ounces. It does it for weekly, monthly totals as well as for each meal. Pretty handy if you like to buy in advance and are anal as I am!

Ok...I really want to feed raw. But I am SCARED TO DEATH! I have gotten SO close to doing it then look at my dog, think about the bones, salamonila (SP), and other things and chicken out.
It is safe or is there a trick to avoid illness and problems?! lol

yes its safe.. raw bones are fine, cooked bones are BAD.. you can always do premade raw from www.omaspride.com if you are scared. as far as salmonella, as long as you wipe down the kitchen area you use and wash their bowls you will be fine

Im with ya Amy Jo I just cant do it. Not to mention that after doing research for my pet care program and to teach people not too be afraid of having a cat while pregnant I did find that dogs and people too toxoplasmosis can be infected through raw meat and other things too. Anyway I am probably being ridiculous but that is just me. Its not deadly and I believe only cats spread it through feces and one has to ingest it by not washing hands etc. I doubt I will feed raw. The only thing I do is raw marrow bones and I dont even like that being carried off of Rockys spot to other areas of the house. I also wipe his paws when he is done. LOL. Rocky is doing just fine on his dry kibble so thats what I am sticking with. However I did see a dirty jobs episode with raw food and have an interest in RAW hooves. but they were stuffed with raw tripe. So IDK. It just grosses me out.

Amy Jo. I have fed raw for almost 7 years...due to some health issues with Harley I have had to modify the amount of raw I give her but up until about 3 months ago she ate chicken necks, turkey necks, ostrich necks, tripe, etc as well as raw bones.
Harley got sick on one occassion and it was from a RAW marrow bone..the marrow was just to rich for her other than that she has never been sick. Like Maryellen said you can do the pre-made mix and or patties if you want. Feeding raw is not for everyone but you can always give it a try and see.

Well....I fed Honey and Marley a little bit of diced raw chicken breast tonight. There were no bones or anything...I gave them each one cup of the chicken then I fed them there normal food. They loved it...I think I am just going to go REALLY slow (More for myself then for them lol)...Not giving them whole anything for awhile...Just bits and pieces.
Thank you all for the good info!!! I am just such a chicken...I cant help but to fear that I am going to the the ONE and only raw feeder that ends up poisoning there dogs!!! :/

dont worry, the only way the dogs can get sick is if you feed them rancid road kill

You will be fine! Just start off slowly and if you have any questions you can always ask! Also be sure to check out the links Maryellen sent you.
One more thing if you decide that you do want to go the pre-made raw/mixes let me know. I just got the latest Whole Dog Journal and there is a really good article rating all the ready made mixes/patty and I can scan it for you and email.

I wonder if it'd be good to hook up with hunters and use the raw pieces from the deer they hunt. Would that be acceptable? Maybe it can save you guys some cash?

I bought a whole chicken and Turkey drumsticks for them...I will post pics later.
Hmmm...Adoptapitbull....Good question! My dad is getting us two deers to grind with hamburger to cook with (Saves money)... It would really save money if I could give deer to the dogs?!
Can I?

What parts of the deer are good? We see deer daily here and although I'm not a raw feeder, I'd like to be able to give the pups some deer parts if I'm not going to do anything else with them. I may boil or cook them a bit first to lessen my "I'm going to kill them with some raw meat disease" fear :/

someone i know also feeds baby calfs, goats, pigs, moose etc... basically you can feed any animal the entire animal or chop it into parts. if you feel squeamish at first, start with a cornish hen, chop it in half and toss it to the dog.. since cornish hens are so tiny you can start out with that and then work your way up to turkeys, chickens, pigs, goats, lamb, deer etc,..

The second link doesnt work for me...Says "Oops...No data found" But the first has some really helpful pics and info!!! Thanks Maryellen!! Well...The dogs ate a whole chicken and Turkey drumsticks and are still alive lol. This just might be ok! How much do you guys think I should feed Honey and Marley...They both get taken on two 60 minute walks a day...In the house Honey is lazy and sleeps and Marley is always playing. Im not sure how much they should be fed. Honey ate a 1/3 of a chicken (And would have eaten more) and looked like she was going to pop. Marley ate two turkey drumsticks and seemed fine. I def have the hook up with deer...Imma have my dad get us two deer: One for us and one for the dogs!

Sitting here at my computer, I could've had 4 turkeys! They were just pecking along right outside my window! I don't have the heart to shoot them, but Snorts was definitely interested in eating them raw! lol

the amounts go by weight, normally its 2% of body weight, i fed rufus 1 lb of food a day , my gsd got 2 lbs a day as she was 90 lbs plus depending on how active the dog is you just add/remove meat as needed. normally you feed 80% meat 10% bone 10% organ meat (go slow on organ meat it will cause the runs at first - liver is very rich so feed that in small pieces a few times a week) too much bone = constipation or super chalky poops enough bone - nice small milkdud size poops ranging from light brown/crumbly yellow color not enough bone - slightly runny poop pretty much if it has 4 legs or 2 legs and wings you can feed it.. turkey, quail, ostrich, emu, chicken, cornish hens its all edible lol if you feed a whole chicken to one dog and the organ meat is included the dog just got a well balanced meal of meat, bone and organ meat. green tripe is excellent to feed too, its rich like organ meat so go slow. its like doggy crack to most dogs. www.greentripe.com sells it . DONT use bleached white tripe from the supermarket it has no nutritional value and should not be fed to dogs. you can also use abady green tripe in a can too.
