It is separation anxiety ... not b/c she likes the taste of sofas! Google 'Separation anxiety' and there are lots of great way to combat the problem! Behavior modification and sometimes medication! Good luck!

omg she ate the leather couch?? some dogs are power chewers and chew when they are bored, definitely crate her when you are not home and remove all items from the floor that she can get to. give her more exercise to tire her out too. my dog was crated until he was 5 as he would eat everything too , i dont crate him anymore but i still keep items out of his reach just in case

When I was dealing with Jackson's separation anxiety, I used crating, exercise and lots of it, and raw diet to combat it.
Raw Diet? you ask. Yup... I don't think it was coincidence that taking him off kibble and giving him something he needs to chew helped bring an end to it. But I don't think just that would do it.
I bought a treadmill for him, he loved it. It allowed me to exercise him at any hour, in any weather. Plus, use a heavy duty wire crate. I had to use thick cable ties and carabiners to hold the seams together.
You also need to make the crate a favorite place. Feed her in it, give treats in it, special toys for only the crate. Make it her getaway place, but never use it for punishment. No need to get her out of it, it's a way to keep her safe, and your furniture in one piece. Just make it a place she likes to be.

Harley was able to get out of the wire crates but since I got her the vari kennel she has not tried to escape it (fingers crossed she never does) Not sure if this would help your dog or not.
Harley was not much of a power chewer just more anxious about trying to get out of the crate and she found it easier to pop the clips and get out of the wire type than the plastic vari kennel where the only wire part is the door.

Marc I never did try the Calmshen simply because I did not want to give Harley anything extra because of her kidneys. I have heard great things about it though!

As I mentioned above the DAP also comes in a spray. I spray it in Harley's cage about 10 minutes before she has to go in it.

Bella did the same to our couch, but luckily the couch is fabric and she chewed on the corners. I was able to sew it up with upholstrey thread. Petsmart recommended spraying bitter yuck on the couch, but everytime we touched the couch it would be on our hands. She has subsided from eating the couch, but I think it was separation anxiety.

if you just tossed her in the crate and didnt teach her it was a good place no wonder she broke out of it. you have to gradually get a dog used to a crate, and make it a GOOD place for the dog to be in. not buy a crate, put dog in crate, shut door and leave.

Maryellen points out the importance of making the dogs associate the crate as a good place...so true!
Harley has true seperation anxiety and unfortunately has to be crated when we are not home. Leaving her out of the cage only resulted in more damage to not only the house but herself. I have tried every and anything with her.....tried gating her in the family room-disaster, tried giving her run of the house-disaster! Crating her is a neccessary evil!

i wolud never just stick her in a cage and leave! we left the door open while were in and put treats in for her to get on her own accord
she did the damage because she has realy bad panic attacks we love our dogs like our children and take as much time whit her as we do with the boys

dogs dont get panic attacks... treats alone in a crate with door open wont work, you can feed her in her crate to associate good things= crate, start out with door open, feed in crate a few times.. then once she is comfortable with that, feed in crate with door closed a little, do that a few times.. then feed in crate door closed little bit more, etc.. keep slowly working on it, worse case is you have to get a vari kennel if she keeps breaking out of the wire crate.. also, this breed needs a ton of mental and physical exercise- not enough exercise = pent up energy in a hyper dog = destruction ....
more exercise mentally (www.bustercube.com or other mind game toys) and more physical exercise- walks,, obedience training, jogging, etc.... will tire her out more and she wont have all this energy and not know what to do but eat your furniture...
also , some dogs are just power chewers and destructive... if she isnt getting enough exercise mentally and physically she will destroy the house and break out of her crate....
