Maryland - A dog named Smiley was confiscated from a home in a town where Pit bulls are not allowed. When she was confiscated, it was discovered that the owner was using dogs for dog-fighting.
Smiley's body is a reflection of the suffering she endured as a result of dog-fighting. Her tongue is notched from pieces being ripped out and her lips are missing. Her face is a testament to the brutality that she endured.
Smiley is sitting in a shelter right now. Her photos are racing through the network of Facebook - haunting people as they view her devastated face.
Smiley can not be adopted - in light of her dog fighting (it is unknown if she was forced to fight, or if she was a bait dog, used to encourage other dogs to fight) past, she is only available to a rescue organization.
Smiley's personality is so endearing that the shelter veterinarian took her home while one of her lip injuries healed. The shelter's evaluation of Smiley is as follows,
“Smiley is very social, enjoys human contact and being with and around me. She did very well with physical exam. She does show some prey drive. I don’t recommend small pets with her. I didn’t see any food guarding issues, she's a little reluctant about her treat or toys at first but did give them to me. My only concern is her slight dog aggression.
Who could imagine that Smiley would not have dog-aggression after the life that she has had? Every encounter with a dog resulted in vicious attacks on her face.
In Smiley's world, a dog equated to pain and misery. As a result, her reaction to dogs has been changed. Many people will state that she has been ruined. That there is no hope for her to be rehabilitated.
Nobody knows this for sure. The true point of this story is to show the public this depressing face of dog-fighting. More than words - pictures. Pictures of a dog treated so horribly that she may not ever find a forever home.
Dogs, especially this breed of dog, do what they can to please their owners. If their owner praises them for dog-fighting, it is what they do. Their heart is not that of a killer - their heart is that of a people-pleaser.
For that, Smiley has suffered. For that, Smiley may be killed. There might be a special rescue out there that can help Smiley, but if there isn't - at least Smiley will not be abused further.
She will no longer suffer injuries that maim her body and wrack her with pain. But what a sad ending that would be. A social dog that enjoys human companionship has been destroyed by people that she desperately wanted to please.
On the off-chance that a rescue is willing to step up and take this dog on, please help circulate Smiley's story. Rescue inquiries can be directed to MIDATLANTICBULLYBUDDIES@.COM.
Even if you can't help, please share Smiley's story. Some people don't understand the whole dog-fighting issue. Some people wrongly believe that Pit bulls are all born vicious - born to kill other animals - born to fight no matter what.
Some wrongly believe that Pit bulls are dangerous as a whole - and for that misconception, these dogs that live to please their owners, continue to die.
