I've long been over the politics of the obed ring, too. We did a mock Rally-O course during Cajun's obedience class and it was alot of fun. I have been really interested in it, too especially when I read discussions about it with other trainers. I love the encouragement and communication of the dog-handler team. Just would be so much more fun. Happy, happy heel:

I just want to say Don't Ever Under Estimate Your Dog. YOu can always retake the test and then you will know what you can work on. But let me just say 6 of us went to take the CGC and my friend Rach was just going to go and see and I told her NO - you better take Max, she was like oh I know he wont pass. Another friend said well I am going to get my dog Angie tested so I will know what we need to work on. WELL all 6 dogs were tested and guess what ALL 6 dogs PASSED.... Angie is not in this pic, but Max is he is the white w/red.. Anybody in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and you want to get your dog CGC tested another group of us is going to take it- the test is FREE all you have to pay is the 5.00 to mail in the certificiation... Send me a PM and I can give you more details.

Is that first dog a Presa? Also, who is testing CGC for free? There's a $10 evaluator fee fo whoever is evaling is losing money there. Just curious.

No he is a Cane Corso. There is a obedience training facility in my area and the obedience trainer is a AKC evaluator so he does it for free.

Every year our group holds an event called Bully Bash. It is a dog carnvial for pit bulls. At the event we have CGC testing and TDI. It is a wonderful way to educate folks to take their dogs to training. Having a CGC on your dogs assist with insurance issues and a positive thing to say about your pit bull. I love asking golden folks if their dogs have their CGC or not. :-)
I agree the dogs should test every year to ensure they are living up to their wonder titles as Canine Good Citizens.

What exactly are the fees for getting a dog tested and getting the certificate? I have heard free-$45. I really want to get Boomers CGC but I need to work on him meeting other dogs. He gets wild (happy) when he sees another dog.

I just read through this, and it is so discouraging Everyone says how easy it is..... I tried this and failed multiple times because of how dog aggressive Kanga is. If another dog looks at her the wrong way shes done. And we have gone through years of training and practice.... She can do anything with people. What does therapy dog entail?

It is easy for dogs without behavioral issues, but NOT easy for dogs like my Luca and your Kanga. I have never taken Luca through it because of his issues with other dogs. I'm still willing to meet up some weekend if you want to try to work on her. No promises, but maybe I can at least give you some insight or help you change her perception and make her a little easier to manage........

therapy test is part of the cgc.. all the 4 groups incorporate the cgc in the therapy test, you can however tell them you want to do visits alone without other dogs around and they should test you based on that.. therapy dogs go visit elderly, kids in school, hospitals, nursing homes.. you walk around and ask if anyone wants to pet the dog.. for kids you can do a reading program at school.
i charge between $5-10 for the cgc, depending on if its a person alone $5 or at an event i charge $10 and give either half or all back to the group holding the event or the local shelter.

Some insurance companies will give discounts if your dogs have a CGC and others will not even accept APBTs with out one. Just a little extra added incentive. It also could be helpful when renting.

Eko and I have been attending CGC classes for a couple weeks, and due to pass the test in November. For those who think its too tough, dont give up. Persistence pays off. We were struggling with basics a year ago. It seems too easy now, and I feel we're more than ready for the test. Ps- how's this for distractions? :-) Hanging with the cows by mr-haze, on Flickr Cheers, Mike

I use a martingale along with a no-pull harness. I connect my lead to the ring on the martingale and to the ring on the no-pull. Is this allowed for the test or can my lead be connected only to a regular collar?

I believe not you will need to work on walking on just the martingale collar.

www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfmEquipment All tests must be performed on leash. For collars, dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars made of leather, fabric, or chain. Special training collars such as pinch collars, head halters, and electronic collars are not permitted in the CGC test. As of November 4, 2010, body harnesses may be used in the CGC test. The evaluator should check to make sure the harness is not of a type that completely restricts the dog's movement such that it could not pull or jump up if it tried. We recognize that special training collars such as head collars and no-jump harnesses may be very useful tools for beginning dog trainers, however, we feel that dogs are ready to take the CGC test at the point at which they are transitioned to equipment that allows the evaluator to see that the dog has been trained. The evaluator supplies a 20-foot lead for the test. The owner/handler should bring the dog's brush or comb to the test.
