BTW the dogs name was Nipper. There have been newer nippers like the puppy have you ever seen the puppy. I think I once read the newer RCA dogs had pit bull mix. Oh boy more research. Nipper was a leg biter hence his name.

That dog was TINNNNNNNNNNNY as far as I can tell. I think Fox/Jack Russel Terrier-ish dog. That is what I think...but there are a lot of people on the internet that claim Nipper was a pit bull.

History of Buster Brown Shoes www.brownshoe.com/history/bb-1902.aspAlso click the History of the Brown Shoe tab as that is also buster brown history. Dog started out as a cartoon. The photos are small but the live dog that went on tour with actors could be a pit bull.

I know Helen Keller had a few Boston Terriers, but I think this dog looks like a pit bull: pitbullextreme.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/hellen-keller-and-pit-bull.jpgIt seems like a lot of the Pinking Pit Bull people claim all sorts of dog to be Pit Bulls. There was even one website listing "famous" Pit Bulls that claimed Sparky (Stan's dog on the cartoon South Park) was a pit bull!!

Lady is very about this news, but we were kinda in doubt about Sgt Stubby and the RCA dog (and a few more), so it's good to know we were in doubt for good reason. I've seen lots of WWII pictures with Pit Bulls and those posters from back then are also awesome, so we don't need to use other non-Pit Bull pictures from the past to make the breed look good. It really doesn't look good when the anti-Pit Bull people call us out on those pictures either. It makes us look like we have to lie about our breed to make them look good. SO not the case!

So I was reading the Lost Dogs and got to the chapter that touched on the APBT history. It was on target with the history thread. But also Sgt. Stubby was mentioned. Sgt. Stubby is a mix and is referred to as a an unpedegree dog and a "bull terrier". There are a few photos on the Con Military site I posted earlier where he does resemble a pit bull but he looks rather small. As for the RCA dog I think what caused some confusion is that there is a famous dog named RCA that is a Pit Bull www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/articles/rca.htmlI remembered this as when I was writing my story and I referred to Pit Bull hero's I came across this site. I remember being quite fascinated with wheela. www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/pospress.html

I never knew about RCA. Wheela is cool Yeah, I think the RCA dog might be one of those cases of telephone. More recently I am seeing the RCA dog as a famous Pit Bull. Where I had read about the dog named RCA a while back. I looked up about the RCA dog a while back too when Rocky was a pup. I had an RCA DVD player and the dog looked similar to Rocky on the menu. However the dog in the photo with its puppy was not the original and not the one on their web page. An Assumption: Or could it possibly be that one of the dogs used later on to play the roles of Nipper and his pup Chipper were or looked like pitbulls. From Wikepidia: Nipper lives on through the brand names; he even appeared in ads on television with his "son", a puppy named Chipper who was added to the RCA family in 1991.[7] Real dogs continue to play the roles of Nipper and Chipper, but Chipper has to be replaced much more frequently, since his character is a puppy.

I went back to the story I was writing to double check my research. I ordered a book from the library again which Is where I thought I learned about Stubby. I just got it yesterday War Dogs by Michael G Lemish copyright 1996
Here is what I found. Such is the story of Stubby, a stray pit bull picked up from the streets of Hartford, Connecticut, by Robert Conroy. (10)
endnotes 10. In literature Stubby has been described as a pit bull, bulldog, Boston bulldog, and probably a few others. Chances are he was blessed with a little something from several breeds.
(This is something that I have decided is probably the case. I believe that so many dogs have all kinds of things in them. When I was a kid, I remember so many times puppies being given away at the local grocery store. One that I once took home that now I am sure was a mix including pit bull. My husband who I met as a teen also had a dog that was brought home as a pup from same place. Now looking back at photos she was a fat piggy pit bull probably a mix also. I can almost bet that people who are afraid of them today who had dogs as a child likely had a dog of pit bull mix and never knew it. Whatever Stubby was he was an amazing dog and today would definitely be labeled as a pit bull if he were rampaging the neighborhood. I have learned we should not be referring to him as a Pit Bull but can refer to him as a mixed dog possibly of some of the breeds above. His Obituary had him as a Bull Terrier.

Just wanted to open this topic back up since I am starting to do research on war dogs for a presentation I will be doing at my library this may for memorial day. While doing my research found this page, and what I found at the bottom of the page was very interesting.......... www.governorsfootguard.com/stubby/Complaints about the Stubby Article Thank you for your interest, but messages regarding Sergeant Stubby's breed are not currently being accepted by members of this command. The information in the Stubby Article is based upon research obtained from a variety of scholarly resources. Those wishing to promote their personal agenda regarding Stubby's breed should direct all inquiries to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History (http://www.si.edu), the official custodian of Stubby's history and remains.

I dont know if I already posted this too lazy to go back and read through but I also have a link to Sgt. Stubby's Obituary in the New York Times 4th of April 1926 where Stubby is called an unpedigreed dog, later referred to as a brown and white brindle "bull terrier". www.ct.gov/mil/cwp/view.asp?a=1351&q=257958anyway I think he is some kind of bull breed mix. In each photo I see of him he looks very different. There is one where he does have some pit bullish look. others where he looks boston and some bulldog. people taking the time to argue with someone who has chosen not to include breed since it is unimportant to what the dog did for his fellow man should realize how they look to some outsiders of breed fancier.
