i swear he is costing me more money as i get older lol.... his new thing, to freak out when i am at work if he hears a noise (like neighbors yelling and fighting) and broke thru a wooden baby gate ran down my stairs and chewed off the new molding and insulation i put on from his last incident.. so i go out last night and spend $80 on a metal gate from lowes... get home after driving around with him for 3 1/2 hours trying to find a metal gate , set it up, ok all good this morning i leave for work, latch the gate which is at the top of my stairs, and go to work. i couldnt make it home for lunchtime to let him out , so i get home at 415 and guess who is waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs...... panicking and panting like crazy... my other neighbors told me they heard him clawing at the door around 3pm.. they told him thru the door to stop and he did..... so now tomorrow, he will be babygated with the metal gate in the bedroom, and i am going to put a towel over the gate at the stairs so he cant see down and see if that works.. next step- back to a crate ... grrrrrr oh and the kicker, he must have used his paw to pull the gate door open, cause when i got home the gate was unlatched but he didnt realize he could go back thru the door if he pushed it with his nose.....

You know I feel for you as I went through this with Harley for years. The bad thing is it was so unpredicatable some days I could gate her in and she would be fine other days she would get out and harm herslef and tear the house apart. At the ripe old age of 10 she is back to being crated...it stinks!

Geez Rocky is terrified of gates. Maybe if you make the metal gate crash down he wont go near it anymore. LOL. I know that's mean but just if you show Rocky the gate will fall if touched he wont go near it. Its better if I lean it rather than attach it cause if it is leaning he really wont go near it. I am surprised at Mr. Rufus. Maybe he wants his crate.

Marc and I went through something similar with Brandy when we moved. We went from the run of the house to a crate. I would come home to explosive diarrhea and the metal crate bent from her pulling on it. We took her to the behaviorists at the University of Pennsylvania and she was diagnosed with severe separation anxiety most likely caused by the move. They told us that dog owners come home and find their dog's dead bc they pull out their canine teeth from pulling on the crate. So please be careful. Jackie had some of the same problems when she first moved in with us, but being through this before we knew what to do.

ME maybe set up a Cam so you can see what he is up to while gone. My dad did this easily with an old video camera to an old desktop. Then somehow it is set up you put URL in windows media player and can view his living room. Guess a cheap web cam could do the trick too.

he has been fine since i moved here, when i had a foster dog here he was fine too, i really think its because he is alone while i am at work, and grew up with dogs in the house. my gsd had severe SA and i got her a dog and that helped her lol... so now tomorrow he will be babygated in the bedroom as well, and I am putting a sheet over the stairway gate so he cant see the door and try that. worse case he goes back in his vari kennel . i really need to start fostering again as he does so good with another dog here...grrrrr

That's what Marc did for Jackie now. It's Logitech and we can watch her on Marc's Iphone or his laptop. We got it at bestbuy.

i cant view anything at work anymore, we have a new computer system and Big Brother is watching, so i cant watch him on a webcam if i am at work:(
if i could find something that would let me watch it on my cell i would. i would love to see what he does all day long and how he gets the gate door open without breaking it... and find out what is triggering this behavior, i know when the 2 idiot girls argue and fight that sets him off when i am not here. he has always hated yelling and screaming from the day i got him, and when the 2 girls fight its so loud everyone near me can hear it..

the logitech camera has an iphone & blacberry app, so i can always see. It was pricey but worth the piece of mind, and has allowed us to go from 10 mins of away time to about 6hrs. (And this was with Jackie).
Before the logitech we had a flip and recorded it and reviewed it when we got home.
Both with Jackie & with Brandy, it is a long slow, building process of time away. With Ms Brandy it was working from being out of the room. With Jackie its been a little easier(toich wood)
Have heard many here opposed to meds, but with Brandy it was needed as her quality of life was much better with the combo of meds + behavior work, and weening the meds off later.

Poor Rufus. Winston is very close to going back to a crate. We were gone 3 hours tonight and my house is trashed. Maybe fostering would be the way to go if having another dog calms him.

I crate Keona when I'm gone since she's a chewer and I have multiple dogs, but I don't like leaving her in it for extended periods. I was going to be gone from 5 am to 4 pm and had the neighbors coming over to let them out, so I left her in my bedroom with her food, water, and toys. She ripped my carpet up and put huge scratch marks in the bottom of the door. The crate is where she will be from now on.
I hope you can find a solution so he doesn't have to go back in the crate. Good luck!

I would love it too. Maybe we could work something out if it gets real bad. We could meet half way or something. Do you work near home? or north south east west home? Yeah Rocky too has a difficult time with just raising of the voice. He deals with it though just goes off by himself looks for a place to get away. So maybe Rufus would feel safe just to have the crate all covered with blankets with door open just to go there and hide. Have you tried that yet? I have been thinking of getting a job with a chain pet care program. However the pay is not so good considering having to travel. I will be looking into it again. However I rather do it on my own. I have a job offer to work for a day care (with human babies). But I am done with that and dont care to hang out with little boogie noses all day. I am grossed out by it always have been. Rather pick up poop and deal with dog drool all day. LOL But I really prefer to take care of Pit Bulls because I know how difficult it is for owners to find good care from people who understand.

Chubby was crating for a while and did great until one day he tried to break out. He had managed to bend the bars enough for his snout to shove through by his top canines had gotten stuck and he bagnt o panic really bad. Luckily my yonger brother was home and heard the commotion. He had to essentially bend the bars back and rip a good chunk of the metal out to free Chubby. I don't doubt that if he had been home alone he would have indeed ripped out his own teeth to escape.

Couple of things that worked for me:
1. Jackie seems to like the soothing music called "Through a Dog's Ear". CD is like $12 and you can also get it through itunes. i play it on repeat for her. 2. we started crating Jackie for short periods when we were home and i still do it now. SHe gets Yummy stuff in there and she learns to settle. A good case of the above is that she's a happy, wiggly, jumping, whining mess when people come over. sho when she wont greet right, i put her in crate and she just calms down and sleeps. very strange.
good luck to you
