This weekend has been not so great...
First someone mentioned to me that her "rednose pit bull was 80+ pounds and was in no way a mix" when all pictures screamed American Bulldog.
Second, someone asked me if I knew anyone with "American Pits or Pits" (their exact words..) and I asked them if they'd be interested in a puppy from the shelter. Person said no, they want to breed their male.
Then to top it off, the adoptive home that was supposed to take Tiki (well they did take her for a few hours) had an incident with the resident dog when Tiki got there. And she's still trying to adopt a female with what appears to me as a dog aggressive female. That's not a big deal for people who know the breed and can manage a crate and rotate household. But this lady had NO IDEA about Pit Bulls and that they can be DA.
I just feel so discouraged right now, I feel like people around me are getting dumber and dumber. I have basically cut off all contact with the outside world (Stayed on my home all weekend, haven't used my phone, or talked to anyone besides coworkers and my fiance) because I feel like there's no point in trying to talk to people anymore.
What I don't get is how you guys involved in rescue or anything similar deal with stuff like this. I figure it happens quite a lot for you guys to experience things like this, how do you guys deal with it? I really want to be involved in the breed and help but I feel like I'm doing absolutely no good for the breed at all.....

My belief is "if I can save the world one Pit Bull at a time" then I am doing something. Starting with my own. The worst is when I volunteer at the shelter and the paid employees (ACO) are the least informed nor do they want to learn. Pig Headed. Followers of a Cesar type trainer. But helping just one dog makes me happy. I have run across people who believe their 100lb Full Pit Bull is more Pit Bull than My American Pit Bull terrier. They have the papers to prove it. There is no convincing them its a lost cause just have to move on.

I don't really work in rescue, but I have dealt with this kind of stuff before. I had someone tell me the other day about the history of the Cane Corso. He said that, "Corsos are actually Pit Bulls and when Pit Bulls were banned the monks took them into the hills and they stayed pure, unlike the Pit Bulls you see today." Oh really? That was an interesting one. You can't talk sense into people who think like that. Rather than do actual research (which is not all that tough to do these days) they believe weird stories they hear from their buddies or the dog's breeder. Until people wise up, we are going to keep seeing 110 lb "Pit Bulls" from the hills of Italy.
I'm sorry you're having such a stressful time with it, but just know that you are doing good work. We appreciate it, even if others don't seem to.

Thanks CA and Christina, I think it was just a hard weekend.
The first incident already had me very irritated, I was told "your girl isn't a real pit bull, she's a pocket pit. Far too small to be a real one". I tried explaining the standards and kept getting "No, they're supposed to be BIG dogs, not small like you have". It's happened before but it just really got to me this time....
And with the rescue, I voiced my concerns about the possible DA (since the trainer said nothing, owner said nothing, etc.) and from there I got told that Tiki would be hard to place now (she shows signs of being dog selective, I haven't found any dogs she likes or even tolerates besides Aida and Bruiser) because her and the resident dog got into a scuffle. So she may end up being a foster failure so the rest of her life can be successful. I mean financially it's harder for us to care for 3 dogs and 2 ferrets (the rescue doesn't provide food or supplies other than crates) but we mange, the dogs always have food, toys, beds, etc. and most of all they're loved.
I dunno I'm rambling now, sorry lol.

Sometimes you just can't fix stupid. Do your best and if you help one dog or educate one person count that as a success.

I have also heard the opposite from people who think a pit bull is a short legged big headed scary looking thing. He is too cute I have heard.

I agree 100% with you Shay. It can be hard to help the dogs when people themselves are the problem. I haven't fostered(hope to in the future though), but just talking in conversation with people the things they say about APBT's and dogs in general are so ignorant. To make a long story short my husband's cousin got a Great Dane/German Shepherd mix puppy for protection since they live in a bad part of town. She wasn't sure if she would get him neutered and I was urging her to do so. Then she talked about a lady across the street who has an APBT and has not been spayed. I guess male dogs jump the fence all the time and try to mate with her, but this lady doesn't want her dog to get pregnant. Well, duh? Get your dog fixed. Supposedly this lady says her dog isn't worth as much money if she's altered. WTF?? It's hard to educate people when those are the type of people out there. CA said it well. As long as you can save on APBT at a time something is being done. It's hard, but keep your head up.

I have a crazy neighbor that has a "full blooded" pit. He even brought out her gold-leaf scrolls documenting her "pureness" the day we moved in. A month later we adopted our AmStaff, Oreo. We could have cared less about breed, color, papers or bloodlines. My daughter saw his picture, and fell in love. My neighbor promptly came over to inform me that "because the dog has little cowlick swirls on his rear hindquarters, he's not pure. He's a mutt"... and so on. Mind you I was eyeballing the swirls on his "pure" dog's behind and chuckling. The previous owners had papers, but because we planned on fixing him anyway... the papers were useless except for picking up doggie land-mines in the yard. I honestly thought he was a mix, but was promptly informed he wasn't at his first vet visit.
I'm just happy we got one hell of a great companion. He's pretty much kept my sanity the last 10 months while I've been home with a back injury. You just ignore the moronic humans... and keep the focus where it needs to be.. those dogs!

New thread who has butt swirls? with photos. LMAO! Dharma has some big ol' butt swirls. I doubt she'll let me get a good picture of them, though. She hates the camera.

Andrew's swirly butt is no comparison to his little swirly "kiss" on his chest. It's my favorite thing about him (well, among about 1000 others)
I'm glad that where I live people will compliment Andrew when I walk him. I still laugh when people literally run the other way when he's with me in the park, though. I've heard "man, that's one VICIOUS dog" while he's panting and got a huge grin on his face. *face palm*
