www.newstalkradiowhio.com/news/ap/health/deadly-dog-virus-hits-nj-shelters/n8m5/CLIFTON, N.J. — Officials say an outbreak of a deadly dog virus at animal shelters in Passaic County is under control. Shelters in Clifton and Passaic reported several cases of canine parvovirus in the past two weeks. Officials at the Clifton Dog Shelter said some dogs were so sick that had to be euthanized. Parvovirus infects dogs' intestines and can cause lethargy, loss of appetite, dehydration, vomiting and bloody diarrhea, among other symptoms. Experts say it is preventable and there's no cause for alarm for dog owners whose pets have had all their vaccinations. Clifton Animal Control Officer Robert Boyle told The Record newspaper the sick dogs were separated from rest and some healthy dogs were shipped to other shelters so they wouldn't get exposed.

It's not unusual. All it takes is an infected dog or litter to be picked up (they are municipal shelters that perform animal control) then all the uninoculated population is at risk. It can be controlled but not avoided.
It's happened a couple times at PAHS since I've been there, 1993 or so.
