Custody fight emerges over abused pit bull Patrick found in Newark trash chuteNEWARK — The feel-good story of a starving pit bull rescued from a trash chute has turned into a nasty custody battle that's headed to court. The dog nicknamed Patrick because he was found on the day before St. Patrick's Day is now at the center of a dispute between the Associated Humane Societies and the hospital where he is being treated. In a 40-page motion filed Wednesday, the humane society says it wants to move Patrick to Popcorn Park Zoo, which houses abused and neglected animals. It wants to vacate a court order that allowed the dog to stay at a pet hospital while the criminal case against a Newark woman charged with abusing him proceeds. Patrick has received thousands of letters of support from around the world and had his own Facebook page. www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2011/05/custody_fight_emerges_over_abu.htmlI don't know where to post this, so move it if you think it goes better somewhere else.

Unbelievable. Shelter/rescue politics at its worst. Of course Patrick deserves his happy ending... but he is not a commodity to be exploited. Thousands of abused and neglected dogs, and they want to fight over one.

I don't know what Popcorn Park is like but it sounds like a place that would let him socialize and heal. At the animal hospital he's probably just confined to a kennel and run yard. Definitely in Patricks best interest if his health is stable to get him in a socially nurturing enviroment, the court case could drag on a long time.

I don't know what popcorn zoo is, but I do know that Patrick is being really well cared for at the Veterinary center he is at not. He gets to play with all the staff, gets visitors every day, gets to play outside and gets to be out in the office for at least part of the day. From the updates and pictures online, he looks very happy and it doesn't look like he spends all that much time in the kennel. I don't know if he'd be better off at the popcorn park zoo, but I do know that his welfare is not the reason behind the suit. It's all about politics and poor Patrick isn't even being considered. I just hope where ever he ends up, he is well taken care of and happy.

Well looked it up basically it is a AHS zoo of rescued wild animals. Guess they need that dog for publicity or something.

Popcorn Park Zoo is a crappy place run by AHS. I haven't been there in years, but it doesn't exactly have the best reputation. I shouldn't be surprised that this is turning into a political nightmare.

Even I didn't see this coming. A court battle over a dog by the state's largest private animal control operation and it's premier veterinary hospital. I can guess that it's about revenue and donations for AHS, and quality of care for GSVH.
AHS is gonna shoot themselves in the foot.

its again, how they can make even more money off this dog... AHS did this years ago with another pit they had in, (jeanne said the dog was there for YEARS and was their "poster" dog as the dog generated tons of donation money at the newark shelter, and the shelter wouldnt adopt the dog out due to the funds the dog generated)
this is really really sad, and i feel horrible for patrick and the vet tech who wanted to adopt him
