Where do they come up with this stuff.
74-Percent of dog attacks are by pitbulls. Animal experts say a dog's behavior, primarily lies in the way these animals are raised. Some breeds like pit bulls are known to be more vicious than others.
Barking and Biting are two things all dogs can do, but what makes a specific breed more vicious than another? Dog expert, Joe Hinojosa at Brownsville's Animal and Regulation Care Center says residents should be aware of pitbulls, but they are not the only dogs which can be dangerous. He says, it's the responsibility of the owners to raise their dogs right. According to statistics, the numbers are alarming, nation-wide in 2007 Texas ranks number one, with seven dog mauling deaths. Georgia, Florida, Tennesse, and Illinois, also rank high. Still Hinojosa says tail wagging and heavy panting are genetic, while violent behavior is something that's taught. For pitbull owner, Roldan Aviles, he says he's raised 5-year old, Meemees, and she is not violent, and he's confident his dog would never attack anyone.

Sounds like the reporter was going off local stats. Say a pound responds to attack reports and 74% of their reports in a year are "pits" or something that looks like them. They mention that to the reporter and that becomes the stat used in the report.

Could be 74% of the owners are NOT responsible owners, plus with the population of ampb's ..that could add to the numbers too. I know in my area if you visit the animal shelters run by the county and city, the majority of dogs are pitbull or staffies.

I wish I could force every reporter and every legislator to read Karen Delise's books.
