The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland ( www.arlgp.org/) is a pretty great no kill shelter near my place in Portland, Maine. They have some great programs and often work with SOME Pit (A Southern Maine Pit Bull Advocacy group). I've supported them quite a bit over the last couple of years, but today I was slightly disappointed to see their Facebook status. It says, "Beagles, Chihuahuas and Labs, oh my!! Our kennel is full full full of beautiful dogs ready and waiting for you to take them home. Stop by and get to know them!" I looked at their adoptable dogs page and They have 18 adoptable dogs in total. Of those dogs only 2 are Beagles, there are 0 Chihuahuas, and there is only 1 lab while there are 7 APBT mixes!! Interesting how a shelter that is usually so pro-Pit decides to leave out the fact that they have plenty of Pit Bulls needing homes when they want people to visit the shelter! I am happy to see, though, that a few of their recently adopted dogs are seniors. They do a pretty good job promoting senior adoption, which is good.

Hmm, it does seem like they are avoiding the whole pit bull thing in their advertisement. That's too bad. I guess if it gets people in the door, maybe they will fall in love with a pibble instead.

True, I just wish that Pit Bulls could be the draw! "We have plenty of beautiful, wiggly, smiling Pit Bulls just itching to make new friends, so Come On DOWN!!"
