The other night I received a call from Jessica, Scarlett's new mom. It seems her and Chuck have split up and are having a heck of a time being civil. She wants the dog, but Chuck won't give her the dog.
She told me that he had killed one of their other dogs, and that when she went over to the house to pick things up that none of the animals had food or water.
Needless to say I was extremely pissed and worried. She said she had contacted the police, but that they wouldn't do anything. I told her I would call the next morning and figure out what to do.
So I call the sheriff's office. I told dispatch the story I had been told. However they have no record of any call being made by Jessica. I learned that the dispatch lady is involved with rescue, and runs a foster only rescue, and is the one who contacted us about Zeke.
Anyways, she told me that a deputy would be in the office later and she would have him call me. Which he did.
He informed me that the law had been out there several times this past week, but there had been no complaints over dogs/ownership. Explained that there are two sides to this story and I'm likely not getting all of it. (duh)
He was hesitant to get involved and wasn't sure how much he could do. I explained the adoption application that was signed states that if we find that the adopted dog is not being properly cared for, that by signing they agreed to let us take the dog back. I told him that state law says that as rescue/shelter, that we must provide access to clean water, shelter, shade and food. I then asked him if he could go check on Scarlett and the other animals that are out there. He agreed to do that, and if I chose to drive out there he would let me pick her up. Oh, there also had been no report made about a dog being killed either.
I also asked him if he could have Chuck call me as well, since I couldn't get him on his cell.
Last night I got a call from the sheriff, and he told me that Scarlett looked healthy, well fed. Her outdoor area had water was clean, had shade etc. There wasn't food, but I didn't expect any to be out since she isn't the only dog in the yard. He also said all the other animals were in good condition as well. (they live out on a farm. house yard is fenced, farm dogs are separate from house dogs)
Then later I get a call from Chuck. I hear his side of it. I told him I had requested a sheriff go out and check on her... etc. I asked him about the dead dog.
Turns out he did not kill the dog. He had it put to sleep due to cancer. I already had their vets # so I called them today, and they backed up his story on the dog. When I initially checked with the vet before Scarlett went with them, there were no red flags. The animals were up to date on shots, fixed etc. His cattle/horses have had proper care as well.
Here are my points:
1. Jessica filled out the application and signed it.
2. Chuck paid the adoption fee.
3. I think Jessica wants Scarlett to spite Chuck.
4 I already knew Scarlett liked Chuck over Jessica.
5. The sheriff told me I should settle this fight by taking the dog back and neither of them getting her.
6. I am pissed that I'm being put in the middle of this.
7. Jessica called today and left me a msg that Chuck has an emaciated Great Dane tied up behind his house.
8. I think she's nuts.
9. She doesn't know I ever heard back from the sheriff.
10. Do I just go get Scarlett and say eff you both? Or do I let Chuck keep her.
wtf
