I have a question regarding Bola (The Pit we are potentially adopting)...
If an adult male dog has a desire to mount (AKA hump) a spayed female dog could & would this behavior change with neutering, training, and time?!
The guy we are looking at gets a little 'excited' with Honey and the shelter staff is hesitant about adopting him to us because of this.
Its really weird...He smells the open wound she has by her ear (From having that lump removed) and then trys to mount her.
They will play together sniff each other and be fine but every once in awhile he sniffs and licks that wound then he trys to get on her.
From what I know, (And believe now), I would think getting him neutered, exercising him A LOT ---Hes been confined to a kennel since April--He has plenty of pent up energy, and teaching him commands--Him responding to No and I would think It would work. But, then again almost every dog Ive had and been around has been neutered at a young age.
What do you guys think?!?

Humping is more often than not a non-sexual behavior. It's over-arousal, control, and sometimes just a complete lack of training. Neutering should help in general, than general training, and working to teach impulse control.
Most dogs are high strung and stressed out in the shelter, and humping is often a manifestation of this mental state.

I wouldn't say this is a deal breaker unless Honey is really getting worked up over it. If she is okay or even just mildly annoyed, then it's probably something you can manage. Most likely he will settle down and it may only be an issue once in a while.

Ok...That’s what I thought... Wanted to make sure tho.
I’m really surprised at the way that the shelter director is reacting to it. She seems SO hesitant and was putting it off like we should get a female...I know my Honey girl...She LOVES the boys but is much more stand-offish to females and I know that wouldn’t work.
When he tries to get on her, Honey thinks it’s a game and starts doing zoomies, or she just moves away. Honey didn’t really seem annoyed at all. Honey actually really liked him---She kept licking his face and inside his mouth.
Im going to talk to them---We will see... I don’t really have my hopes up at this point because Im not going to adopt a female (A female Pit and a Female Corso that’s grown up with a male dog & is not a fan of females sounds like war to me) and the Shelter Director is REALLY hesitant because of the mounting. Kind of frustrating---We thought it went well! The day we left the shelter--The director told us they were going to neuter him Tuesday (9/6) and we could pick him up and take him home Wednes. (9/7). Then the next day she called and said that they wanted to do another meet and greet with Honey today AND they postponed the neutering. :/

humping causes fights, which is why they are hesitant, they figure if he is humping already he will be returned for humping after a few weeks..

My husband was determined not to get Beastley neutered. He felt it was wrong. When he tried to mount our great nephew he said it was time to neuter him. Once this was done Beastley has never tried to mount anything. It worked for us.

I dont want to hurt him but Id really like to burn some energy out of him!!! Saturday is probably too soon for a long walk after neutering. You might have to use the time to start a crate/NILIF program for him... do the frozen Kong thing, or try some training exercises since thinking is hard work that will tire him out!

humping causes fights, which is why they are hesitant, they figure if he is humping already he will be returned for humping after a few weeks.. Yeah but then they go and suggest a female? Smart. NOT.

Ok! We are going to take him on a trip to PetsMart on Saturday to pick up some new toys. Ill grab him a Kong. I plan on starting off pretty strict with him because he doesnt seem likes hes had a ton of training. And Mary--That was my thinking. Im just glad they decided to let us adopt him! I quoted you lol...Your first responce to this thread. She agreed that exercise and neutering would more than likely curb this behavior

When i first adopted Chubby, he was a humping machine! Thankfully only other dogs, but still! It took lots of training and exercise (both things I know the new pup will get in abundance with you) and he rarely does it anymore and if he does A quick "No! Sit." and he settles right now.
Can't wait to see pics!

rufus will hump sadies head when they are playing for a long time, its more of an excitement thing but i still stop it as soon as it starts or stop their play before it gets to that point. i am sure once he gets exercise and training he wont hump honey anymore

Todays Neuter day!!! Aww...Rufus looks like he'd NEVER do such a thing! lol. I agree...It was like night and day after he had a little walk from one of the shelter volunteers. I can only imagine that once he gets a headache and his body is tired from exercise his last thought will be humping her. lol. Last night Kris was saying-- "You are going to make this poor dog miss the days of laying in a kennel by the time your done frying his brain and walking him into the ground." Lol Its not going to be that bad
