Scoutsmom-
I've been raised with working dogs all my life. Rotties, GSDs, Huskies.. Etc. So i'm no stranger to them needing exercise.
Actually what got me into APBT is a kind of cute story..
A long time ago in a Petsmart far far away my mother and I were on the hunt for a new dog. I believe it was the 5th Petsmart we went to that day.. Anyways, next to the adoption center sat this BEAUTIFUL cream color dog with brown spots. She was sitting pretty, wagging her tailing like a helicopter and I approached her. Her handler said her name was Sparkles. Well being as I was a ferret in a past life it immediately caught my attention. I offered her my hand (palm up) and she starting licking me to death. I was in love. I spent a good 15 minutes on the floor getting my face washed by this dog until I asked "what breed is she?". I was terrified of pits after my husky was viciously attacked in our own back yard. I sat there, kind of dumbfounded when it clicked that it wasn't the breed that was bad, just the owners of those two dogs. I asked if she was up for adoption, but unfortunately I was an hour to late. We ended up adopting an 8 week old Rottie we named Buddy that my mom fell in love with but I always thought about that encounter with Sparkles, the APBT. When it came time for another dog, my uncle actually gave us one of his puppies (he breeds GSDs up in Idaho. Only sells them to friends. ) Annie is a great dog, but again it ended up being my moms dog. Now that I'm on my own (well with my bf) I wanted to get a dog. My apartment (they are individually owned and my landlord is a nutcase) doesn't allow it so I waited an entire year until we chose to buy a house.
Once we're in the new house i'll be able to get a dog.
I've had many very positive encounters with pit mixes and purebreds and I always remembered the dog I met that changed my mind.
I started doing my research and after hanging out briefly with several other forums (most of which thought hog hunting was an acceptable sport) I found this place. In the short amount of time i've been here I've learned soooo much. I know now that I made the right choice when I chose this breed.
As for the age of the dog. My boyfriend and I have agreed that a young to adult dog would be best for us.
If you remember the name of that book just let me know. I like to read about the breed.
