Maybe they mistyped but...I don't think they did...so, you decide. One of my rescue friends created a private "vent" group on FB for various friends to go to and unload some steam that they might not be able to put on their own FB or whatever. Anyway. This is what one person posted, who I do not know. "Lost a "friend" this week because I dared to stick up for pitties! I am so tired of hearing pitties called vicious, unreliable and all need to be killed by stupid small minded people! AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHH You should have seen her reaction when I corrected an AC officer who said pits had been bred as fighting dogs! Pitties were bred as NANNY DOGS and I had no problem standing up and correcting the AC officer. Why in the world do stupid people keep perpetuating these stupid lies about beautiful dogs??? That AC officer needs to lose her job, too!" Stepping lightly with this stranger who's "heart is in the right place" but knowledge isn't, this is what I replied to the post with: "Well, as a pit bull person, pit bulls WERE bred to fight other dogs. That was their purpose after bull baiting was made illegal. And, well the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (a cousin of the American Pit Bull Terrier) was frequently touted as the "nanny dog" over in the UK where they are most popular. There's no doubt, pit bulls are FANTASTIC with kids, but they aren't really nanny dogs either. Check out www.realpitbull.com for some good info about the breed " Eeep....where does some of this history get so lost in translation???

Well, we know she meant well and some people just can't accept history as it was sometimes.

Yikes all right! Yesterday at the program I did at the library. I did say that the pit bull was originally bred for dog fighting. peoples jaws dropped. they were not expecting me to say that while walking back and forth with Rocky talking about pit bull myths and then The Truth. That persons comment is the exact example i had used about how well meaning people are coloring the pit bull world pink by embellishing history. Things like how pit bulls were the "Nanny Dogs." And this spreads around through people who mean well but are actually creating an issue where people that will not be working with their dogs and not doing crating or supervising the dog will possibly end up with that mis behaved pit bull that gets into trouble. Now we have a news flash. But on the other side there is nothing worse than hearing from a retired NYPD police officer who is obviously concerned about my dog, say I was trained pit bulls cant be trusted if it heads for you that is a reason to use the gun. I have noticed that the few NYPD officers that have come to my door are concerned about Rocky coming at them. Interesting that my son may soon be one. Wonder what his response would be if they actually do learn that.

That is scary Alicia but unfortunately as we all know that thinking is becoming more and more prevalent.

Ay yi yi. Ok, I've heard all the nanny dog misinformation, but wow. All the breeders back in the day bred dogs solely for the job of nanny? I almost want to laugh at that. Almost.

Someone else got brave enough to reply to the post, some other person I don't know:
"Most pits are bred as fighters and to protect drugs nowadays. Maybe originally they bred them to be nanny dogs...but really who would let any dog watch kids? Haha It's a shame people use these dogs like this...it's sad...I see it every day and then 3 or so weeks ago a baby died because of 3 of these dogs...the owners raised them to protect drugs and fight. I read a pd report that these 3 dogs ripped a jrt apart 2 years ago...honestly these 3 should have been killed then!!! So basically it's all in the way they are raised! One of our ACO's has one and she is the sweetest thing ever."
And THANKFULLY, the friend I do know in the bunch piped in a reply without me asking so I didn't feel compelled to dive back into it.
"See I don't put much stock in the "it's all in how they were raised" theory. I think the way you treat a dog plays a role but I don't think it totally shapes the dog and I think a dog can overcome mishandling and abuse and go on to be a great family dog. I've seen a lot of dogs come out of fighting situations and other abuse cases and go on to be awesome family dogs"

It's a never-ending battle against these myths. Sadly, I'm beginning to resign myself to thinking that this battle can't be won.

It's frustrating, but I don't think we should be silenced either at the prospect of defeat. Keep on talking, keep on making it louder and more real than the lies and misinformation. The day we lose conviction is the day we've lost the battle.

Totally agree, Alicia. I only get louder when I feel defeated anyways! I'm so Facebooked....I wanted a like button for that LOL Some days I feel defeated and believe the revisionist history of the dogs will push out the ACTUAL history and there's nothing we can do about it. Other days I feel like I don't care what anyone else is doing or saying because I have truth on my side. But I agree with what Alicia said above and I'm thankful to have people in my life that I know are fighting for the dogs and truth. And Alicia, the upgraded version of this forum will have Like buttons. I can't wait!!! ;D
