Why do so many rescues use choke chains/prong collars on Pit Bulls and other Bully Breeds? I see it all over Facebook and it really disturbs me...

Why do so many rescues insist that there's no such thing as a pit bull breed, but also pit bulls were originally nanny dogs, and also pit bulls are for everyone and require no special handling or experience but you better use a prong collar on them? The answer is the same for all of these perplexing mysteries: they don't know what the eff they're doing.

I noticed that at Oct tails the other day. Yup our babies pull but choking and prong collars ain't gonna stop them, before I got a harness Opie would almost puke she was pulling so hard on a regular collar...a choke chain and she would've pulled herself purple. But at the park almost all the ahem...pitty type doggies...had choke chains, think someone would enlighten these people that there's kinder options

A lot of rescues use choke chains, you're right. Drives me nuts. Being at a dog or adoption event with rescues and seeing all these dogs hitting the end of leashes and choking themselves --- eeeks

I used a choke chain for many years. I was taught how to use one by a very good trainer. Then I got a dog that it just wouldn't work right on, and I switched to a martingale, and more positive training. I used to say "It's just another tool, learn how to use it." Not anymore. Lola is grateful that I switched.

Some tools when used properly are specifically meant to be aversive. That's how they work.

I put a choke on Rocky once. The first time I corrected him, it scared him so much he pancaked and would.not.move.
I haven't used one since.

When we got Bella she had a choke chain on. We left it on her for a couple weeks until we got a new collar. The early pictures we have with her wearing that collar just make me cringe. I feel like a complete idiot ever using one and now I want to smack anyone I see who has one on their dog. Use a harness now for walks and love it!

You're not an idiot, lots of people have gone through the process of using choke chains and then having an epiphany and moving on to better, more humane equipment. Until very recently, choke chains were highly acceptable as training tools. They still are very commomly used in certain circles.

The answer is the same for all of these perplexing mysteries: they don't know what the eff they're doing. Yup. Once, when my dad caught me trying to put a choke chain on my neck to test if it hurt the dogs (back in the 90's), he said that dogs have a stronger/different kind of neck and choke chains don't hurt them like they would people. Despite that, he never used a choke chain on any of his dogs, so I don't think he ever actually believed it. I just don't see how anyone could use a "tool" on their dog that they wouldn't put on themselves. Whenever someone comes into the shop asking for choke chains (we don't sell them), I ask what they are using it for and try to suggest something else, usually the Easy Walk or Sporn Harnesses or the Gentle Leader. I hope they all come to their senses soon.

Sad to see so many so called rescues employing their use.

My Pit Bulls were the catalyst for me becoming a positive trainer when I did. They've been a catalyst for a lot of things, actually.......

I took Rocky to a training class where choke chains and rope type slip collars were to be purchased directly from them. Lucky for Rocky the choke chains were not in his size so he got a softer rope type. Still chokes though. After he snapped at the damb trainer who came by to do what is called stand for examination. He leaned to pet Rocky. Rocky jumped on him to say hello and this guy grabbed him by the collar and said off. With that Rocky air snapped him then the guy lifted him by the collar and shook him. I was speechless. Needless to say that was our last day in that class. At first I thought the guy was good he got results from the other dogs. But Rocky was such a good dog I never had to correct him in class. To see someone correct him made me ill. And I realized that Rocky was being taught that getting pet was a bad thing. I get pet I say hello by jumping I get choked. Took a while to be able to grab him by the collar for important reasons. He automatically would air snap at collar grabs. I actually still used that collar for a short time until I went to a positive clicker training class. Who eventually showed me the front clip harness style and I was allowed to use that for class. Oh yeah and in the class with the strangle collar trainer felt that prong collar was for level 10 use. Not to start with that only use for no results with choke. and believe it or not Suzane Clothier rather see use of a prong then head halti. So cant always agree with everything each trainer does. We all figure out things as we go and I do not consider anyone an idiot just dont know any better yet.

i use a prong on sadie, she just cant grasp walking on a loose leash with me and other dogs around and with my bad shoulder i cant afford to get surgery. if i walk her alone she is fine, but once she sees a dog she pulls. her and rufus have prongs when both my shoulders scream, rufus is usually great on a regular collar(except for this past walk sunday he pulled like a train the whole walk which he never does ) .

Yeah it's okay Maryellen, the way Ophie is with stray cats and other dogs sometimes I'd have to use a prong too if she was any stronger. Some dogs and situations you gotta do what ya gotta do
