Sigh. www.ywgrossman.com/photoblog/?p=676For over 100 years AMERICANS knew that Pit Bulls were nannies? REALLY? 100 years ago this breed was in its infancy in America. The UKC was only formed in 1898. Where is this 100 years' worth of the breed being called "nanny dogs"? And I'm noticing in these articles, they aren't even referring to "pit bull type dogs", they are specifically naming the APBT. Guess I'll have to add to the Myths section on RPB - "Pit Bulls were known as 'nanny dogs': NOT!"

Well I just told 10 people the truth at the library program who had no pit bull knowledge and never heard the nanny dog thing before. They found that just as ridiculous as locking jaws. I am asking my library if I can do a pit bull awareness program. that will probably have to wait until next october. Thing is though if it goes well other libraries in the system might ask me to come to their library. After watching that video on the blog, I would love to show that I am going to start working on a pit bull awareness power point soon. That is how I am going to tell people. I once believed the Nanny Dog thing too. But realized what a bad thing that is to push and since there is no real documentation other than photos with dogs.

That article is ridiculous. I read the comments(which i generally try to avoid) and the people who are in favor of the APBT posted the most ignorant comments. Nanny dog blah blah blah, the most decorated war hero dog blah blah blah. Pro APBT or Anti APBT, neither have a flippin' clue.

Emily is absolutely correct. There's no going back on this. We know the truth, and can only try to correct the open-minded. Those that don't want to be educated won't be, no matter what you tell them.
You need to pick your battles, ones that you can win. Otherwise you make yourself crazy.
(BTW, such a GREAT movie.)

True, battles need to be picked. I guess because I'm such an APBT history buff and have spent soooo much time studying it over the years, this bothers me. I'm not ashamed of my breed's history. I think it is disrespectful to the dogs and what they have gone through to sweep it under the rug or make up something altogether. Although I suppose some would say anything positive that comes to light in the media about the breed - true or not - should be embraced and celebrated as a victory.
I'm too stuck on fact, maybe.

I'm just like that. But I do choose who I educate, and ignore the rest. Like I said, the wave won't stop; I won't ride it, but I won't stand in it's way and get bowled over.

(BTW, such a GREAT movie.) Ditto! I have a strange fondness for Lee Marvin movies, LOL! I always though of it as a John Wayne movie, even though it's not, really. But John Wayne and Lee Marvin play it like Gabriel vs. Lucifer. And they're not even the main characters. Lee Marvin never played a bad part. Mary, it's a great western, eff'n ya like that stuff. A real character study.

I love Jimmy Stewart, but not a Western fan overall, nor a John Wayne fan. But this movie comes highly recommended and I love good character studies.

Lee Marvin never played a bad part. He even managed to make his character entertaining in Paint Your Wagon.... I hate that movie, but he's hilarious in it! Ok. I'm going to stop turning this into a Lee Marvin thread!

I would just like to wonder out loud why a 'nanny' dog has such a spikey collar. Seems like it would poke a kid's eye out.
