Another comfort food for dogs, cats, any critter feeling under the weather is a cup of cooked oatmeal, canned dog, cat or baby food, and water/milk/broth/supplement to thin it out. Could probably add egg or vegetables too if you wanted. It started out as kitten gruel years ago when we had to feed a litter and stretch the canned food. Good first food for learning to eat out of a bowl and then found out adult cats and the dogs love it too.

A whole shirt?? Wow...that's impressive!! I have to admit, Snorts is having some junk food in these sick days! Essentially he did not have any food from Sunday when he became sick, till late Thursday night. He dropped 4lbs, and looks absolutely pitiful. I figure he can have a few bites of cake this week I don't care what he's eating, just so that he's eating!

Snorty had some oatmeal and egg for breakfast! ...and maybe some cake, too. Shhhh....don't tell!

Yeah, sometimes calories are calories and the more the better. I've helped many an emaciated dog in my day, and the one overriding lesson I've learned is: Find out what they want to eat and give them as much as they want of THAT, but not all at once!!!!! Food brings out the ideologue in lots of people, I've noticed. So much so that I largely avoid the subject. But the one circumstance in which I am sufficiently adamant about NOT being a food purist to take on all comers is this one.
Oh, and incidental to some research on hypothermia I was conducting for extraneous reasons, it's also true when bringing someone out of hypothermia, ie when people are so cold that they stop shivering and can't warm themselves up. There's quite a bit to doing it right and mistakes can be fatal, but one important point is that they need freshly ingested calories (their fat stores are useless till their metabolism kicks back in properly, and that can be awhile) and lots of them right away. Lots of people think a warm beverage will warm. It really won't, UNLESS it is chock full of sugary calories!

It's kind of like the guys from "Deadliest Catch". You see them eating whenever they can, but rarely do you see them (unless it's the captain) with a hot tea or coffee.
Calories can do a lot for a person or animal. It doesn't mean that I'm just going to feed Snorty ice cream and cake till he gets better, but a few small bites of high calorie foods definitely help to perk him up.

I can't tell if a pile of something on the floor is poop, or puke.
Snorts is still on very soft food like oatmeal, noodles, cooked veggies, boiled meat, etc. This morning I came into his room and there's a pile of something on the floor. It does not stink. Usually if someone has an accident, I smell it as soon as I open the door. Nope, no smell. It's a little soft, so it's hard to tell by size. The last thing I gave him last night was bread with his pills in it, and I don't see bread. But would I see bread depending on what time he threw up, if he threw up?
I called Jim in for a second opinion and he says poop. I'm leaning towards poop, too, but Snorts seemed to be in pain last night, which makes me think it could be puke. If it's poop, whatever, I don't care. He never messes in the house, though his system is still adjusting so it's safe to say he could have just had to go. If it's puke, it makes me nervous that something is wrong. This afternoon will be 6 days post-op, so there should not be any vomiting at this point.
This sounds like the rant of a crazy person. I'm just gonna go get my gloves and figure it out.

It is at least someone more likely for puke to have little smell than poop and I agree, if it IS puke, that is a sign of some continuing concerning. SO here's hoping my hunch is wrong, or at least it isn't real serious.

My gloved finding is that it was most likely poop. Based on what he had to eat yesterday, I figured if it were vomit, I'd see some bits. Also, he is definitely a puke eater. If he pukes, he tries to eat it right away. Seeing as it hadn't been touched, I'm leaning toward poop.
He definitely has his appetite and personality back. I'm getting nudged as I type. He's also "talking" (snorting) to me again, which he hadn't done when he was sick.
I'll have to take some pics. His incision is pretty fierce. He says, "Chicks dig scars, mom."

Poor baby man, I'm so glad he's starting to feel better. Little snorty boy!!! And yeah, I still wince thinking about Luca's incision - those things are NASTY and HUGE.
