From their Pit Bull History page: "For the purpose of this website, we've used the generic term 'pit bull' to describe our dogs, even though there is no proper definition for pit bull. Recent research including DNA analysis by Dr. Victoria Voith and others has proven that dogs commonly identified as pit bulls are quite often a mix of multiple breeds, so breed identification by appearance alone is now considered to be inaccurate and misleading. The conundrum is a good one though, because it frees us up to look at these incredibly popular dogs as a fascinating American phenomena rather than an identifiable item with fixed genetics, behaviors and definable features. Welcome to our exploration of the enigmatic pit bull!"www.badrap.org/breed-history

Even more confusing than the mish-mish that is their "pit bull history" page (wtf does this even mean: "While we puzzle over what a pit bull is, we should all take note that the dogs have been dutifully helping us learn what it means to be human...."), is that their mission statement still reads "Securing the future of the APBT....."
Please note, I'm not bashing BR - I'm just saddened that even one of the most recognized, big-name orgs that USED to be committed to The Breed, has gone the way of the "generic shorthaired blocky dog possibly-incorrectly identified as a Pit Bull" advocate.
(Ps. I'm going to keep asking this question until I get a logical response: if we cannot ever identify a Pit Bull (APBT) and therefore cannot/shouldn't ascribe any breed traits, does that mean overall "breed rescue" is a fallacy???)

If there is no such thing as a pitbull, then what the heck is that dog labeled APBT doing the fancy walk amoung all the other pure breeds at Westminster and the like?
"First up we have a gorgeous pure breed Labrador! Next up, a stunning Portuguese Water Dog! Lastly a pitbull-type dog, potentially a Dogo and American Bull mix?" That just ain't right!

Pit Bull activism is starting to feel like life in the Twilight Zone. All this "we don't even know what a pit bull is" crap just baffles the heck out of me.

I noticed that "little" conflict with their mission statement too. But really, BR has NEVER been about purebred APBTs.. and all reports are that they pretty much ran screaming from the "real deal" APBTs they encountered in the aftermath of Katrina.

Yeah they were, back in the day. I did a lot of online work with them (read: Donna), writing/editing material and stuff (i.e. Pit Bull Rescue Code of Ethics). They were all about APBTs aka Pit Bulls. But yes, I do understand they have pretty much always shied away from anything other than mushball dogs. Leah told me stuff about Katrina....

Just amazing. "There's no such thing as a pit bull, but we're saving pit bulls."
Ride the wave, Mary, and just do your thing. You know you're right.

GMAFB. How can you have "Pit Bull History" if there is no such breed? Or are they saying that there is such a breed, but our dogs aren't it? If the dogs are just some randomly bred "phenomena", there is no history!
P.S. I wanna hear about Katrina LOL

Wow. They are just trying to sound fancy and confuse us into thinking what they are saying is clever.
