the problem is that the new rescues see $$$ for purebred dogs, and think nothing but revenue for their rescue.. i paid $175 for rufus 9 years ago, and he only had his first set of shots and was NOT neutered from Burlington Animal alliance, and the only reason i got him intact was because my rescue friend knew his foster mom and they trusted me to get him neutered. actual shelters charge alot less, more around what john's shelter charges. i got my rottie Sonny from the Warwick NY shelter for $65 back in 2002 most shelters range between $65-125 for dogs

it's a fascinating discussion (separate from the issue of unhealthy dogs in the story) When does a "fee" become a "price"? When does the amount become "too high"?

it's a fascinating discussion (separate from the issue of unhealthy dogs in the story) When does a "fee" become a "price"? When does the amount become "too high"? Well, lots of these bogus rescues do nothing for the dogs re spay/neuter, etc and charge a premium price. They also don't hold dogs long and I've heard some things about what happens when "merchandise" doesn't "move". If people are clearing a profit, which is precisely what some of these people are in it for, they aren't rescues, but dog brokers, and unethical ones at that, given their minimal care and often crappy holding quarters. I would contrast this sort of case with Burlington County Animal Alliance already mentioned, who do charge much higher prices than we do here, but also take on a lot of medical hard luck cases and don't even remotely cover their costs with their adoption fees. Indeed, they've been in financial crisis numerous times and live life on the edge of ruin. If they occasional make more back on a given dog than they put in, that merely partly subsidizes the whole operation. Many private shelters are like this as well. Indeed, all shelters occasional place a cream puff so fast that they clear a unit profit. But these lose some money on almost all animals and a ton on some.

Rocky was a 50.00 donation to the shelter but I gave 100 and had to put 100 deposit that I got back when I brought him back to be fixed.
