Anyone know anything about this org?
Email I received:
Dear Friends in the Sheltering Community:
On Wednesday, I helped launch a new national animal-welfare nonprofit called the Humane Society for Shelter Pets (http://www.humaneforpets.com/). The organization’s mission is to help Americans who want to help shelter pets connect at the local level. You may have seen ads in USA Today the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, or the Chicago Tribune announcing the group and encouraging people to give locally.
The sheltering community knows well the confusion that exists with the general public. Most people mistakenly believe that donations given to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) will wind up helping local shelters. Many of us have asked for donations only to hear too often, “but I already gave to the humane society,” or we've asked for financial support from HSUS only to be told, "that's not what they do."
As the former Director of Education for HSUS I saw firsthand how local groups are in dire need of resources. Part of the reason I left HSUS was so that I could go back to working day-in and day-out with pets in need. And I firmly believe that the best way to remedy the financial shortfall is to make sure people know to direct their money locally.
That’s why I joined with the Humane Society for Shelter Pets (I also work for a local animal control in Maryland).
HSSP is about much more than just newspaper ads and a webpage, although I'm sure those have generated interest to give to local animal shelters. In the next few months we'll be launching a number of programs that directly benefit local shelters, including a grant program to help underwrite fundraising and advertising expenses.
I hope you’ll consider joining our campaign. To join, you can click here or visit this address: www.humaneforpets.com/take-action/join-hssp/ If you'd like your shelter to be added to our database of shelters, please include your address in the comment field.
We're also currently building an advisory panel of shelter professionals and others to guide our organization. Please drop me an email if you're interested in joining our advisory board or have any other questions about the organization.
Sincerely,
Didi Culp
Co-Director,

P.S. I'm personally by how HSUS has responded to me and the people I work with, especially in light of HSUS's pledge for civil discourse within the shelter community. HSUS has made a number of misleading statements regarding HSSP. I am not going to go into them in detail, but if you have any questions feel free to drop me a line. I'll do my best to get back to you.
