I gotta write a blog. I am constantly floored by the misinformation out there about these dogs - coming from the pro-Pit Bull side! What are some of the new myths you've seen pop up in recent years?

there's no such breed as a pit bull! they were bred to herd cattle! they were America's Dog until the dogfighters got ahold of them!

There is actually no breed called a Pit Bull. It is just a generic term used to describe any dog you want! There are no breed traits, except for that they are all super friendly and great with other animals. If you are going to misuse a term put quotes around it! "That makes it all better!" (Here's the newest: www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10150396324797076&set=a.136542472075.109798.51042412075&type=1&theater "Breeds," eh?) When in doubt, make up terms! "'Pit Bull' Dogs" "Victims of Dog Fighting" "Breed Discriminatory Legislation" "Elderbulls" Etc. Pit Bulls are just like every other dog, but every dog is an individual.

Definitely all of the attempts to deny the history of the breed, or that there is such a breed. (One bit of idiocy I heard someone who worked for me briefly at AAC spout till I corrected her is that Pit Bulls are not a "natural" breed. Well, yeah, insofar as all breeds are the product of artificial selection and are therefore not NATURAL KINDS, that's right. But it's certainly not a distinguishing characteristic and "natural breed" is actually an oxymoron.)
Refusal to believe that while an individual Pit Bull indeed may or may not be any more prone to getting into a fight than any number of other dogs, if it DOES get into a fight, it will likely fight with a tenacity and intention to achieve total victory that overwhelms other dogs and is more than most people know how to handle physically or even CAN handle emotionally. I've seen people turn in these dogs after that big fight happens and they look and act like they are in shock hours after the event. DON'T TEMPT FATE STUPIDLY!!!

I think my biggest pet peeve, is the 'it's all in how they're raised" If I'm in a good mood, I'll reply with 'not entirely, the Michael Vick dogs busted that myth' Sedona, and Darma too bust that one. Scarlett was raised with other puppies, other dogs, and wasn't abused/neglected. Yet she went on to be DA. (she is now in a single dog home, and doing awesome) If I'm in a bad mood, I will walk away... and keep the smart remarks to myself. I believe it is a trait found in this breed that allow these dogs to rebound from adversity in the extreme with different degrees of flying colors. I could go on and on and on

It's ALMOST all in how they're bred, how they're raised and how they re being handled or mishandled (not just physically, but psychologically/emotionally) right now - but there's STILL room for the occasional "where the hell did THAT come from?" to arise as if out of nowhere. Any animal more complicated than a jellyfish is too complex for it to be "all about" anything simplistic!!!

Well the first two of mine are not from the pro pit bull side but the are what I hear the most.
"I didn't think Pit Bulls were allowed to be therapy dogs, anyway he does not look like a pit bull."
"He is an American that's why he is so small."
"it's all in how you raise em."
"we had a DA female, we worked out her issue by kenneling her with a dog she loves and gets along with."
Well meaning rescues that have dog kennels lined up with nothing separating the pit bulls or other breeds too between each other. Wonder why that sweet girl has a bloody little nose?

Awesome, guys!!! Keep'em coming! I may have to do this in two parts ;D Any resources/references are helpful, too. I want to make sure this doesn't come across as merely opinion. I'm going to credit the blog to RPBF members, too, for your help

The locking jaws and bite pressure thing really bothers me. There's just as much info out there saying the two are not true, but people still don't get it. I get BSL update emails and BSL was passed in an area of Nebraska the other day. If memory serves me correctly, I believe the article stated of the 10 bog bites in the last year(or whatever) only one was from a Pit Bull, BUT since there jaws are so strong and they can do so much damage, blah, blah, blah.
Also, they are so unpredictable and can snap at any minute with no warning.

how about idiot comments? Like the one from the city council meeting... I can get the minutes from the court house. There was a comment on how pit bulls bite differently, the way they bite make them more dangerous.

Great idea, Johnr!
I've heard negative things from people that like Pit Bulls, too. The one that always springs to mind is when I had Benny, I had a guy come up to me to talk about Pit Bulls. He said, "Your's has got a big head. I'm glad mine's head is small. When their heads are too big, their brains swell up and cut off a nerve and that's when they snap." I was too stunned to realize that even if the brain swelling thing were true, wouldn't it be more likely to happen if their head was too small??
And then all of the comments on Pit Bull articles:
They have the bite force of a lion.
They were bred to kill.
They have poor eye site.
Unlike other dogs, they bite without warning.
They can hold with the front of their mouth and chew with the back.
Etc. etc. etc.

Heard that too Christina....Heres what they tell me--
"Its only a matter of time....A Pit Bulls brain never quits growing....As it swells he will become aggressive and unpredictable."
Dam!....Guess someones going to walk into a blood scene because he is going to eat us all!
---A little OT but isnt the whole brain swelling thing actually a condition that Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have due to small heads? But they dont get aggressive, just causes intense pain?! Maybe Im wrong....
