I have wanted a pup for a long time now. I know I made a post with my 2 dogs on it and those are my dogs but I don't live with them anymore, it is a long story and I still see them frequently but wanted a pup of my own to raise and train like a pro. I came home today, my dad 'needed help with something' and sure enough he had a Pit Bull pup waiting for me when I arrived. He is a cute little booger but right now he is definitely way closed up. You can see a hint of love here and there but he is uneasy about things for sure. I will be using the '2 week shutdown' period to help him along before we get into serious training. There is a dog-store not far from here who sells the altimus food? I will get there tomorrow unless there is anything else advised but the reviews on it look superb. Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

i wouldnt do a 2 week shut down with a puppy... an adult dog yes, but not a puppy.... puppies with a solid temperment should be outgoing and love everyone, not "closed up"...
please socialize him and find out where your dad got him from, so that you might be able to find out some sort of history on him and his genetics

I am glad I mentioned this, are you sure it does not include puppies? I don't mean to test your knowledge I just want to make sure I do what is in the pups best interest. As for history I would've posted it but I have none to go on. The pup is displaying the usual loving, licking temperament since he came under my authority around 5pm. At that point he seemed tired, wanting to rest...A little playful here and there but mostly wanting to lay in the dog-bed. From what I understand my father had him 'out and about' today going to pick him up from the 2-hour trip, taking him to my grandmother's and then PetSmart for essentials etc. The pup seems a little weary, not wanting to walk on the leash(though expected) and whining when I make him come with. (as I type this he is starting to finally play around with a ball, bark at nothing and be silly, go figure) Thank you for saying something. I never used the 'shutdown' with my other pups and thought maybe I missed something and forgot a couple pages of the books I had read. ;o) ty. When I read Mary's post it added up that

I also wanted to add that he was taken in for a few days by a family that then gave him back to original owner. Then my father came along and got him.
This tied that whole 'shutdown' idea together. Would it still apply?
I am well-aware of the need to socialize the pup, you are saying I should not necessarily wait for that 2-week window before I begin? It did seem like a lot of time. I know how crucial the first months can be.

It depends on the dog some less then two weeks some more. I would leash him to you in the house but still take him out to meet people etc. Just dont over do it. He was probably tired and stressed from all that happened with the other family and your dad picking him up and out about for two hours. I would wait at least a week before jumping into a training class. I got Rocky as a pup and I did not know about 2 week shutdown. Socializing him was good for him. My moms dog was 2 and she needed the shut down to know who was her everything. I think with an adopted puppy just slow it down for the first week or two dont expect too much from the pup. But remember a tired puppy is a behaved puppy.

Hi Drew, your new pup is ADORABLE! Congratulations. Please get him out and about ASAP. There is a very small window of opporunity to socialize - ideal timeframe is up to about 12-14 weeks. After that, you are basically playing catch up. How old is this pup? Also, moving this to the main board

I definitely wouldn't wait to socialize him, he doesn't need a shutdown at this age. How old is he? Has he been to a vet yet? Had any vaccinations?

NO shut down for puppies... get him out an about now..... he needs the socialization before 16 week window closes....
he is tired from his fun day with your dad, which is normal.pups his age sleep, eat, potty, sleep eat potty and play ...

Yeah I only remember bringing Rocky all over with me. At his first vet visit tech was very pleased and surprised at how socialized he was for such a young guy. Does the two week shutdown section say it is for after a certain age?

Congrats on your new pup! He sure is a cutie! Sounds like you're really committed to getting your little guy started off right. There's TONS of great information here on the forum, and many experts to offer guidance and advice. As others have pointed out, the training and health advice for puppies is going to be a bit different than for mature dogs. So be sure to look at puppy specific information. And please feel free to ask as many questions as you can think of. All of us will do our best to help answer.

I am so tired. He is opening up more and seems to be gaining his energy back. He is beginning to come to me for 'comfort' more than just curling up in a ball somewhere. I will come back tomorrow with a more detailed '2nd day' post, and I will be sure to include the new pictures.
So far hes had 2 accidents, both my fault clearly. Other than that he has been perfect. I loaded him on the clicker tonight and we will start a bit tomorrow and try to get his leash-walking a bit better so I can get him out in public.
He has seemed overly cold and shivering...I know its normal but it has been more than my previous pups. I got him a thicker jacket and try to keep the potty trips short.
Night!

What a glorious morning it has been. We woke up excited to see the sun shining, its not too cold and the pup is really beginning to settle in. He came out of his cage tail-wagging and hopping around just happy to be here! lol We had some fun after his morning break, I loaded a bit more with the clicker but this time focusing on eye-contact and marked it with ""Look". He is eating well and though he is still whining at going outside and being in the cage he is making progress. He is getting better with the crate today, I left him to go eat breakfast with my father and came back to a silent pup waiting somewhat anxiously to be let out. I gave him a second to cool off before opening the door and tried to act as if it was 'no big deal' when I did. I have work today for 5 hours so I have my dad watching him, continuing to get him acclimated to the crate. Here are some pictures I took!
