On Christmas morning, we exercised the crazy right out of Saxon all morning with my brother (see pictures therealpitbull.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=pix&action=display&thread=9689&page=1), I gave him some calming treats and we headed over there.
When we got there Saxon was pretty excited to see everyone and he wagged his tail and licked everyone (I had him on the leash to keep him from jumping up). He was pretty bummed to be on the leash so he started complaining in typical SBT fashion. I was sitting in the living room talking with some of Tim's family and Saxon was sitting next to me chattering and whimpering away. Then SIL walked in.
She came over and talked to me and then looked at Saxon. He looked at her and whimpered (not his crazy Stafford sounds, but a normal, pathetic, sad dog whimper). She jumped back as if terrified! I'll say that again, she JUMPED back... Because he whimpered in her general direction... Then she said, "OK well I'm just going to walk away," and did just that. I sat there thinking, is she for real?
We were eventually permitted to let Saxon off the leash. He walked from room to room greeting everyone by licking their hands or rubbing up against them. He jumped up on the table at one point, but I snapped and said a firm "off" and he jumped right back down. Everything was going well, until the cat came downstairs.
The cat is 18 pounds of attitude and when he saw Saxon he went right for him. He hissed and growled at a confused and scared Saxon. This caused their dog, Simon the pet shop Cocker Spaniel, to rush Saxon and growl. Saxon had already retreated to me before Simon came over, but SIL ran over and dramatically said, "WOAH WOAH WOAH!! What is going on here!?" I explained the situation and said it was no big deal, I had Saxon back on his leash and under my control. She said, "Well Simon must have felt that he was threatening Quincy (the cat), he is very defensive of his cat." I told her that Quincy had come after Saxon and she said, "Well Quincy is very dominant."
Quincy continued to go around "asserting his dominance" over people by jumping into their seat or sitting near them. Every time he did either of these things and the person didn't react, or let Quincy steal their seat, SIL would basically them for allowing Quincy to "dominate" them. OK...
At one point an other guest arrived wearing a hat. Simon went berserk. He barked and growled at the guy (in a vicious way not a nervous one) which caused Saxon to come over to me shaking and whimpering. SIL rushed into the room and looked around frantically, when she saw Saxon in my lap shaking, she calmed down. Then she went up to the guest and asked him to remove his hat and reenter the home because he had made Simon nervous... The guy had a look on his face like is she serious? He did it, though.
The most annoying thing was the next morning when I was sitting on the couch. SIL came in to the room and started chatting with me. Saxon came in the room a short time later and jumped onto the couch, curled up next to me and placed his head on my lap. SIL gave me a surprised look and said, "Do you always let him dominate you like that?" I gave her a blank stare and said, "What?" She said, "By not requesting to come up onto the couch he is dominating you. He is telling you that he doesn't respect your rules and thinks everything in the house is his." She then got up, came over, grabbed Saxon by the collar and jerked him off the couch. Then she said, "Now invite him on the couch." I can't imagine what my face must have looked like, but the only civil thing I could think to say/do was, "That's ok, I'll just take him for a walk," and get the hell out of there before I flipped.
At one point I was sitting at the table talking with one of Tim's brothers and the brother's girlfriend and Saxon was on my lap because the cat was roaming around and I didn't want him to start anything. SIL came in the room and said, "You know by letting him sit on your lap at the table you are putting him on the same level as the human and saying he is allowed to eat off the table." I don't even remember how I responded, but it made her go away so it must have been good.
She thinks because she read one of CM's books and watched his show a few times she is some sort of training expert.
There were a few other incidents that really annoyed me/infuriated me, but I don't remember al of them and don't want to flood you guys with any more of my annoyance.
Everyone else liked Saxon fine, including SIL's husband and the nephews' mom. I just hope SIL felt as foolish as she looked to me.
