This is Belize: She was the first Pit Bull I ever met (about 10 years ago). She was a beautiful dog inside and out. Unfortunately, she lived in Miami. Miami has had BSL since the 80's. This led Belize's owner (my dad's girlfriend's nephew) to keep her on the property and socialize her as little as possible. She was always very sweet with me and the people she knew: Unfortunately, she developed a fear of strangers. The first time she bit, I was there. She snapped at a repair man. It was his fault. She was cornered and he went to pet her, she growled, he ignored it and she bit him. Luckily, they convinced him not to call the police on her. That wasn't the last time she bit a stranger, though. Eventually, her owner gave her to a friend who lived outside of Miami-Dade County. And I just learned that she was PTS a couple of years ago because she bit one person too many. It may not be true in the strictest sense, but I consider her a victim of BSL. If she wasn't kept in the shadows because of the BSL in the area, she could have been properly socialized. If she had been socialized, she never would have developed her fear of strangers and she would never have bitten any one. She would have been just as loving with strangers as she was with us. Rest Well, sweet girl. You were a good dog and you will always be the Pit Bull that started it all for me.

I love that first picture of her-so beautiful! BSL really affects dogs and their owners on so many levels you wouldn't normally think of.

If Ophie ever had a puppy it would've looked like Belize. Awww Christina, such a sad story that definitely shows the crime in BSL laws.
